Hill Stafford Girl Scouts earn Gold Awards SPI CIAL TO THE CHRONICLE .. Forsyth County Girl Scouts Carlie Stafford und Heather Hill have earned Girl Scout Gold Awards. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest earned award for Girl Scouts grades 9-12. It follows in the footsteps of the Golden Eaglet, First Class and Curved Bar awards - previously the highest awards in Girl Scouting. It is a reflection of the dedication and determination of each recipient. After the minimum requirements are completed, the Gold Award project is the culmination of a girl's demonstra tion of self-discipline, leadership abil ity, time management, creativity, ini tiative and a significant mastery of skills. Each girl must dedicate a mini mum of 65 hours to planning and implementing her project, which must benefit the community and have a long lasting impact. Stafford, the daughter of Dickie and Debbie Stafford of Winston Salem. led groups in creating a fabric bereavement heart for grieving parents in memory of losing a child in early pregnancy. She also organized a col lection of clothing and toiletry items that were donated to Forsyth Medical Center. Hill, the daughter of Rodney and Diane Hill of Kernersville and mem ber of Troop 40257, held self-defense classes at R. J. Reynolds High School last spring. The classes centered on helping improve the confidence and awareness of students at R. J. Reynolds. Students were taught meth ods of defending themselves when confronted in crowded or secluded areas. The classes helped students realize that when confronted with a potentially dangerous situation it is better to move out of harm's way. Hague inducted into honor society SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi has inducted LaShanda Hague of Winston Salem into the chapter at N.C. Agricultural & Technical State University, where she is studying adult education. Hague is among approxi mately JU.UOU stu dents, faculty, pro fessional staff and alumni to be initiat ed into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all Hague discipline honor society. The Society has chapters on nearly 300 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Membership in Phi Kappa Phi is by invitation and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of jun iors, who have at least 72 semester hours are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.
