distinguished civil rights
activist and widow of Medgar
Evers. will be the keynote
?speaker for the Heights of
Excellence Scholarship
Luncheon on Friday, March 25
at 12 noon. The luncheon is
part of Bennett College's 3rd
Annual Women's Leadership
Conference and is one of sever
al events planned for the day.
The Leadership Conference
is the centerpiece of the institu
tion's Women's History Month
observances. The luncheon will
commemorate the first anniver
sary of the passing of Dr.
Dorothy I. Height, renowned
civil rights activist and builder
of the National Council of
Negro Women.
WFMY-TV's Frank
Mickens will serve as master of
ceremonies and entertainment
will be provided by The Chris
Robinson Band and Joe
Coleman of the legendary
group The Platters.
Evers-Williams met her
husband. Medgar Evers. when
they both attended Alcorn
A&M College in I95(). Leading
civil rights demonstrations and
voter registration drives, the
couple became a prime target
for white-supremacy violence.
Their 12 year marriage ended
when a segregationist shot Mr.
Evers in front of the Evers'
home. It would take close to
three decades, but Mrs. Evers'
tireless work finally paid off
when she was able to witness
the conviction in 1994 of her
husband's murderer, Byron De
La Beck with.
Within months of the 1963
murder, Evers-Williams began
traveling across the country to
speak out against segregation.
The late icon Dorothy
Height.
She became the first African
American appointed to the
powerful five-member Los
Angeles Public Works
Commission, overseeing a
budget of $1 billion. In 1995.
she was elected as the first
female chairman of the
National Board of the NAACP.
Now the widow of Rev.
Waiter Williams. E\ers
Williams continues to serve on
the national board of the
r
NAACP and is working dili
gently to develop the Medgar
Evers Institute. Her established
contributions to civil rights
have gained her numerous
awards including being named
one of Ebony Magazine's "100
Most Fascinating Black
Women of the 20th Century."
She has co-authored several
books, including "For Us, The
Living:" "Watch Me Fly: What
I Learned on the Way to
Becoming the Woman I Was
Meant to Be;" and "The
Autobiography of Medgar
Evers: A Hero's Life and
Legacy Revealed Through His
Writings, Letters and
Speeches."
Tickets for the luncheon are
$50 per person. Proceeds will
benefit the "Heights of
Excellence" scholarship pro
gram at Bennett.
