Spencer takes home College Emmy
SPECIA1 TO nil i HRONIC1 1
Elon College student Jasmine Spencer,
daughter of Harold and Theresa Spencer of
Kernersville, was one of the recipients of a
College Television Academy Emmy on April
19 in Los Angeles, Calif.
Spencer and others from the Phoenix 14,
Elon's student-run television station, won in
the Best Newscast category. Spencer co
anchors the newscast. Other Phoenix 14
team members on hand for the ceremony
included Co-anchor Mallory Lane,
Executive Producer Kirsten Bennett, Senior
News Director Drew Smith, Senior
Investigative Reporter Nick Ochsner and
Faculty Adviser Rich Landesberg.
Spencer is Phoenix I4's first black
anchor. She has worked at the station since
her freshman year. She has been an anchor
since last year. Spencer has served as an
intern at WXI1 News Channel 12. She also is
a member of the National Association of
Black Journalists (NABJ) and was sent to
represent Elon at NABJ's 2009 National
Convention.
In January, Spencer was selected to trav
el to South Africa with professors. During
the trip, she and others had lunch with
Bishop Desmond Tutu and visited the jail
where Nelson Mandela was held captive.
While in Africa, she also shadowed a local
reporter and even wrote a story that appeared
in the local paper.
A member of the Omicron Epsilon
Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Spencer will
graduate on May 21 . She hopes to land a job
at a television station on the East Coast.

Like Barber Johnson,
Bonham said he was not sur
prised to hear of Brown's
resignation. Both Bonham
and Barber Johnson said they
had heard rumors that Brown
had planned to win the seat
and then step down to make
room for John Davenport,
who initially filed to run in
the District 1 race last year
but withdrew once he discov
ered that Brown would seek
another term.
"We had heard rumors
that she was going to do that,
step down to provide a
vacancy to someone else."
Bonham said.
When asked about the
rumor last year, Davenport
denied that he and Brown
had discussed such an
arrangement.
Bonham said he would be
happy to take over the seat.
"I am planning to submit
a letter and my bio (to the
Board) to be considered for
the vacancy," said Bonham.

force."
School Board Member
Vic Johnson, who has repre
sented District 1 alongside
Brown since 1997, said he
would not support Bonham's
hid for the seal. Bonham's
name was included on a list a
group of local clergy
released last election cycle
under the heading
"Concerned Black Pastors
Support the Following
Candidates." Johnson and
Brown were both members
of a group who alleged the
faith leaders were using their
churches' influence in the
community to promote par
ticular candidates. Johnson
and other critics of the list
claimed it was a violation of
federal nonprofit regulations,
and they threatened to report
the members of the group,
which included Rev. Dr. John
Mendez, to the IRS.
"Jimmie Bonham gave us
a fit out there," Johnson said.
"We wouldn't select
Jimmie."
Johnson went on to say
the Board is soliciting
resumes from interested par
ties. He has his own opin
ions about who should fill
the slot, hut he declined to
discuss them.
"I have somebody in
mind, but I don't think I need
to expose or talk about that."
he stated.
Being African American
and a product of the local
community are among the
characteristics that Johnson
said he thought the next
Board member ought to pos
sess. He said he wasn't too
worried about who the Board
selected.
"I think we're going to do
fine; we're going to be
alright," he remarked.
"We've got a good working
board and I think we're
going to be a good working,
board no matter what per
son's selected."
