Giving Him Praise
Congregants hear the last words of Jesus on Good Friday
BY TODD LUCK
I Hi CHRONICLE
Preachers from around
the community delivered the
"The Sjven Last Words of
Christ" last week with spirit
ed. lively sermons at
Friendship Missionary
Baptist Church.
It's a Good Friday tradi
tion for many churches and
Christian groups to hold
services focusing on the
seven last phrases that Jesus
uttered while on the cross.
The service at Friendship
was sponsored by the Easter
Sunrise Service Committee,
which also sponsored the
Easter Sunrise Service at
Friendship on Easter
Sunday. The Committee,
made up of congregants
from a number of churches,
has been sponsoring holiday
events for the past 50 years.
An endless list of pastors
and religious leaders from
around the city have taken
part in the annual Easter
event. The pastors are often
accompanied by their
churches' choirs, who pro
vide music for the event, and
congregants, who watch the
service from the pews.
"For us to host this serv
ice gives us great joy." said
Friendship Pastor Dr. Stacey
Frazier, whose church has
hosted the service for the
past two years.

Bishop John Heath delivers a powerful message at last Friday's "Seven Last Words of Christ" service.
Hundreds packed
Friendship's sanctuary for
last week's program. As they
waited for the pastors to take
to the pulpit, the crowd
enjoyed singing and testimo
nials. The preachers did
more than utter Jesus' last
words. Using their own
unique preaching style, each
man gave a mini-sermon
related to the holy saying
they were assigned.
Rev. Ardeal Roseboro of
Liberty Grove Baptist
Church opened with the first
word- "Father, forgive them
for they know not what they
do4' -with a song about
Jesus. Then he launched into
a spirited sermon on the epic
battle between God and
Satan that he said played out
as Jesus was on the cross.
His voice filled the room,
moving many worshipper?*
