Calendar Ongoing Parent-child workshops Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, 1617 N Trade St., along with Forsyth County Department of Public Health, will conduct a series of workshops on the theme of "Parents Matter! Strengthening the Parent-Child Bond." The remaining topics are: Session 3: "Parents Are Educators," which will be Saturday, May 14 from 1 3 p.m.; Session 4: "I Think I Can, I Know 1 Can" on Saturday, May 21 from 1-3 p.m.; and Session 5: "Moving Forward" on Saturday, June 11 from 1-3 p.m. All sessions are open to the community. Session S will be open to children ages 9-12 along with the parents. The church is at 1617 N. Beginning May 13 Friends and Family Day events The Fresh Fire Worship Center will host Friends and Family Day, beginning on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. with a praise celebration fea turing singers and dancers. On Saturday, May 14 from noon-8 p.m., outdoor events will be held at Kernersville Lake Park, located on Old Valley School Rd in Kernersville. Beginning May 14 Women's conference The Born Again Free Deliverance Tabernacle Church of God The Apostle's Faith, 741 Moravia St., will host the "Women Alive Unto God" confer ence, beginning on Saturday, May 14 at 8:45 a.m. with Bible study taught by Bishop Barbara G. Dr. Sir Walter Mack Jr. and Ms. Kim Romaine Bush will exchange vows on May 21 at St. Peters Church and World Outreach Center. Mack, the pastor of Union Baptist Church, is a native of Winston-Salem, and the son of Mrs. Frances J. Mack and the late Dr. Sir Walter Mack Sr. Bush isa native of Graham and the daughter of Mrs. Erma Bush and the late Mr. Herbert Bush. The two met while under graduates at Elon University and became engaged in February. Dr. Mack arranged a unique marriage proposal with his book publisher. Nestled within his latest book was a spe cial chapter - a proposal letter written to Ms. Bush requesting her commitment in marriage. Since 1999, Dr. Mack has pastored the 4,000 members of Union Baptist Church on Trade Street. Bush is an associate vice-president of human resources at a national clinical laboratory company. She is an active member of the First Baptist Church in Burlington, a board member of the Alamance Community College Foundation Board, former president of the Alamance Human Resource Association and a charter and active member of the Burlington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Bush holds degrees from Elon College and North Carolina Central University, where she earned a Masters In Public Administration. Mack holds degrees from Elon Submitted Photo Rev. On Friday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m., there will be a community worship service at Union Baptist Church with Bishop Noel Jones as guest speaker. Jones and other nation al and local guest ministers are expected to take part in the wed ding ceremony. The service will be accented by a community choir composed of various local musicians and vocalists, includ ing members from the Renaissance Choir, Souled Out, Bishop John Heath, Raymond O'Neal, Mary Haney, David Allen, Derrick Webster and the See Mack on B6 Seed Worship Center celebrates milestones SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Seed Worship Center will celebrate its first independent church facility and the pastoral anniversary of Dr. Brenda Rowdy on Sunday, May 15. Events will be held at the new church site at 1530 Martin St., Suite 208. Services will be held at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Dr. Patricia A. Hauser, pastor and founder of Potter's House Deliverance Tabernacle in Tampa, Fla, and Rev. Sharon Sanderlin Cheek, the founder of Word of Faith and Power Ministries in Washington, D.C. will speak. Hauser accepted her call in 1995 and through fasting and prayer, God instructed her to begin his ministry with her as a shepherd. Potter's House Deliverance Tabernacle opened in 2001. Her work has con sisted of counseling victims of domestic violence. juvenile sexual offenders, abused children with behav ioral and emotional chal lenges, and substance abuse and addiction. She has expanded her counseling work to include treating sex ual disorders, anxiety and mood disorders. In addition to her work with Word of Faith and Power Ministries, she is Co-Pastor at Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church in Washington, D.C., where her husband, Dr. Heath L. Cheek, is senior pastor. Dr. Rowdy says that she is looking forward to "having a great time in the Lord as we celebrate how God has blessed us to endure for one entire year." An See Peppers on B6 Mildred Peppers Sunday School Lesson Story of "Amazing Grace" writer to be staged SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The acclaimed one-man show "But Now I See," which tells the dramatic life story of the man who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace," will be host ed by Trinity Moravian Church, 220 East Sprague St., on Saturday, May 14 at 7 p.m. Produced by Maranatha Productions of Lancaster, Penn., the show stars Erik Nelson as John Newton, who was known is his rebellious youth as "the great blasphemer." The Englishman eventually became the captain of a slave ship. During a storm at sea, Newton experienced the presence and grace of God, eventually aban doning his captaincy to become pastor of the Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Olney, England and a strong advocate Submitted Photo Erik Nelson as John Newton. for the abolishment of slavery. He became one of England's most beloved hymn writers. His hymns also include "Day of Judgment! Day of Wonders!" Written by the late Dan Neidermyer, who directed the 1982 movie "First Fruits" about the first Moravian missions, "But Now I See" has been per formed by invitation in both of the parish churches in England where Ngwton preached. Nelson travels nationally and internationally portraying various Biblical roles, including Jesus in Passion Play produc tions and in re-enactments for tours in the Holy Lands. Starke will speak Sunday at Saints Home SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE WXII 12 News Anchor Wanda Starke will speak at Saints Home United Methodist Church's Women's Day on Sunday, May 15 at 11:30 a.m. Starke has been with WXII since 1994 and has won wide acclaim for the "A Place to Call Home" segments that she produces weekly. The segments profile children waiting to be adopted. It's a per sonal issue for Starke, who was adopted as a young child. Among her many acco lades, Ms. Starke has received The Presidents Award for Volunteer Service and The Maya A n g e 1 o u Women Who Lead Wanda Starke Excellence Award from UNCF. In 1991, she made history as the first African American named weekday evening anchor in the Buffalo, N.Y. market. Starke serves on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Forsyth County and as a volunteer with it's in- school mentoring program. She and her husband. Ron Fisher, live in the Winston- Salem area and are active members of St. Paul United Methodist Church. During the event. Saints Home United Methodist Women will honor one of the mothers of the church, Evelyn Bohannon Carter, as the United Methodist Woman of the Year. Carter, 92. is an inspiration to her church family. Galloway and McMillian will take part in New Bethel events SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE New Bethel Baptist Church, 1016 N Trade St., will observe its 64th Annual Women's Day during the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday. May 15. The Rev. Parthenia Galloway, associate minister of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, will be the guest speaker. Galloway, who currently serves under the leadership of Pastor Dennis Leach Sr., was licensed and ordained as a minis ter in 1996 under the Pastor Donald L. Salley. She served as interim pastor of Morning Star from March 2008 through September 2009. Galloway holds a Bachelor of Theology Degree from Vintage Bible College and will graduate this sum mer with a Master of Rev. Galloway Rev. McMillian Ministry Degree with a concentration in Christian Education. She is the wife of Robert Galloway Jr. They are parents of two children and seven grandchildren. Program participants will also include Worship Leader Cynthia Curtis. Alfreda Smith, Lynda Brown, Barbara Eury, PeRonda Lucas and Deacon Carolyn Crosby. Music will be provided by the Women's Day Chorus, under the direction of Audrey Brown. Susan Hupt is chairper son of the Women's Day Committee. The Women's Day Luncheon will be held on Saturday, May 14 at noon in New Bethel's Multi-Purpose Room. Guests will enjoy a delicious catered meal and a dynamic message from the speaker Rev. Beverly McMillian, pastor of Bethlehem A.M.E. Zion Church in Pfafftown. Tickets for the luncheon are $15.
