He had been prepared by God to lead the people into Canaan, the Promised Land. Lesson: Throughout the 40 years of wandering. God prepared Joshua and the new generation to enter the Prom ised Land. The Israelites, now numbering more than two million are camped on the east side of the Jordan River. God continues to in struct Joshua (from last week). He encourages him to be strong and courageous several times. Success of the mission depends on several factors. Joshua has to be physically strong and coura geous as he was when he spied on Canaan for Moses. Remember, that was 40 years ago! He has to be con fident and faithful to God be cause the Canaanites aren't just going to hand over their land. God cautions him to study and to meditate on the Law daily. The issue here isn't to memorize It; but to live It (obedience)! He must remain focused (not turning to either side) while not be coming frustrated when things don't go as he thinks they should. Living the Law and depending on God are the factors of success. God then commands Joshua to prepare the people for entry into Canaan. Supplies are to be ready in three days. The people from the tribes of Reuban, Gad. and half of Manasseh remind Joshua that Moses had allowed them to stay east of the Jordan. See Numbers 32 for the explana tion. Joshua recognizes their claim but tells them that they are to fight with the remain der of the nation, leaving their families behind. Once they capture the land, those tribes can return to the land once controlled by the Anior ites. They agree to keep their promise. Application: God loves and cares for His creation. He doesn't desire to harm us. Then what's going on? God has expectations for His peo ple. We are expected to be physically strong. Our bodies are His temples, do we take care of them? Secondly, we are to be mentally coura geous. That means that based on God's previous actions in our lives (individually and collectively) we have to be confident. This confidence is not based on self but on Him! Thirdly, we are to be spiritually empowered. This is our faith in the One who was. is and will be forever more! To know who is speak ing to us. we must study and meditate on His Word daily; not just on Saturday night! Study the figures in Scrip ture: the more obedient they were , the more God blessed (not always materially) them. What does the Lord require? To do justice, love mercy and to depend on Him! IN MEMORY OF Mr. Michael E. Griffin January 29, 1957- June 11, 2003 Those we love must someday pass beyond our present sight, must leave us and the world we know without their radiant light. But we know that like a candle their lovely light will shine to brighten up another place more perfect more divine and in the realm of Heaven, where they shine so warm and bright, and our loved one lives forevermore in God's eternal light.
