Historic Davie County 'colored school' to hold reunion SPECIAL TO THt CHRON1CU The Davie County Training and Central Davie Reunion Committee is ask ing all former students to join in the Annual School Reunion, which will begin with hospitality and social activi ties on Friday, June 17 from 7-11 p.m. A banquet will take place on Saturday. June 18 at 7 p.m.. followed by a dance at 9 p.m. All events will be held at the Village Inn Golf and Conference Center, 6205 Ramada Drive in Clcmmons. Each year the reunion festivities are directed by the honored 50-year class. So, with this being 2011. the Class of 1961 will direct events. Two important features have been added over the years: the DCTS/CD scholarship, under the administration of the Davie Foundation, and recognition of the oldest living grad uate. The Class of 1961 will honor Ida Brow n Goolsby of the Class of 1939. The last class to graduate from the school was the Class of 1967, conse quently, alumni will have to think of another way to organi/e the events after 2017, when the Class of 1967 will be responsible for the reunion. The school's roots began in 1925. when the Julius Rosenwald Foundation provided the impetus and shared the funding for the construction of the col ored school that was then called the Rosenwald School and built on Campbell Road in Davie County. The school was initially for grades l-S. It had expanded to grades I- 1 1 by 1934 and to the 12th grade in 1946. The original school burned down in 2002. Extra curricular activities were limit ed, books were old and smelly and coun ty and state transportation was not avail able. These limitations, say alumni, pro vided a respect for learning and instilled pride. Alumni were pleased when the Davie County Board of Education saw fit to name a new school gym for Clyde Studevent Jr.. a former DCTS student, teacher and coach. For more information about the reunion, call 336-W8-3626.
