Former ESR client gives back SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Winston Salem resident Herbert Graham - with the help of his sons Marcus and Alessio Graham - generous ly volunteered his time last week to build a retainer wall at Experiment in Self Reliance's (ESR's) Spring Street location. Graham is a former client of ESR, which helps local working low-income and chronically homeless individuals and families. He said volunteering his servic es was a way to "give back to ESR for everything they've done for me. They helped me at a time when I needed it the most." Graham even went so far as to purchase some of the supplies for the project him self. Karen Spaugh, the resi dent manager at Spring Street facility, remembers when Graham used to be a resident there. "Mr. Graham was an excellent tenant and a good Herbert and Marcus Graham work to complete the wall. housekeeper too! I hated to see him go, but we are happy to celebrate in his success," she said. Graham is now a home owner and has been employed by the Goler House in Winston Salem for nearly two years. Wake law students raise money for recreation center Money will support youth programs at Hanes Hosiery SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Wake Forest University School of Law and School of Business students recently had their second annual JD/MBA 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament - Hoops & Hearsay - on the school's cam pus. Law School students Kelly Amell, Nigel Vanderford, Matt Toldero and Matthew M c C 1 e 1 1 a n organized the event. The tourna ment raised $255 for the Hanes Hosiery Recreation Center. Hanes Hosiery Director/Coach -Art Blevins was delighted and humbled by the kindness. "They're a special group, and I sincerely admire and respect every one of them," said Blevins. "The law students have been helping me here at the center by tutoring and coaching basketball in our youth leagues for seven years now. I'm truly blessed to have their support and friendship." The money will go to the Hanes Hosiery Youth Fund, which helps buy trophies, jerseys and supplies for kids. The Center has also recently received generous donations from Pam Willard, Tim Bryant and Weston & Associates. "God has truly blessed me to have wonderful friends to help our kids," says Blevins.
