Alpha Upsilon honors exceptional high school students SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Gamma Phi Delta Sorority, Inc. held its annual Achievers' Banquet on April 27 at the Hawthorne Inn. Seventeen students from the various high schools were honored before a packed house of Sorors. parents and well wishers. This year marked the 11 th banquet, a tradition spear headed by Doris Moultry, a rpfirprl pHnrafnr j?nH charter member of Alpha Upsilon. The occasion seeks to honor at least two students from each high school who have been identi fied by their guidance coun selors for maintaining at least a 3.2 GPA and giving unselfishly to their schools and communi ties. Those honored this year were: Khadijah Brown of North Forsyth High School, the daughter of Keeva Clark and Joseph Brown; Lexus Byers of East Forsyth, the daughter of Sonya Weaks and George Byers; Victoria Dowell of Winston-Salem Prep, the daughter of Mike and April Dowell; Angel Hombuckle of Parkland Magnet, the daughter of Vickie Graham and Sheldon Hombuckle; Jasmine Hughes of Atkins High, the daughter of Monica Hughes and Henry Miller; Gralicia Jones of Carver High, the daughter of Walter and Tangela Jones; Genice A. Lane of Mount Tabor, the daughter of Gerald and Jacqueline Lane; Clarielle Marsh of East Forsyth, the daughter of Clarence and Margo Marsh; Kimberly Mayes of East Forsyth, the daughter of Ricky and Tanya President Crank poses with honorees Khadijah Brown and Angel Hornbuckle. Porter; Dezmon Woods of Parkland Magnet, the son of Cheryl Woods and Elmo Woods; Kion Young of Glenn High, the son of Tracey Meredith and Kiana Young. The members of Alpha Upsilon Chapter are Mary Brim, Nancy Carpenter, Helen Clifton, Mary Crank, Millie Davidson, Geraldine Davis Shirley Eaton, Jerrye Griffin, Mildred Griffin, Doris Herrell, Susie Nance, Ruby Royal, Gwendolyn Thompson and Aurelia Worthy. Stacey Good son, a talented musician and teacher at Atkins High School, gave the keynote speech at the event, which was emceed by Jerry Griffin. Chapter President Crank for mally presented each honoree and his or her parents with a framed certificate, a scholar's medallion and an engraved tro phy. i NWOA holds regional conference SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The National Women of Achievement, Inc. held its Southeast Regional Conference on April 21 at Friendship Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. The theme of the confer ence was "The Art of Caring and Sharing in Our Communities, Open Hearts, Open Minds." Lewis, fir Manderline Scales, Gwendolyn Clark, Dianne Piggott, Pat Wynn, Beulah L. unch and Willie Kennedy. The Youth Achievers were repre sented by Youth Achiever Jeannette Stackhouse, and S. Wayne Patterson, the president of the Winston-Salem NAACP, was the guest speaker. He spoke about the importance of improving the educational system. Attorney Yvette Stackhouse, a member of the NWOA Kernersville Chapter, also spoke. The group also presented two $500 scholarships. The recipients were Youth Achiever Lexis Beyer, who plans to attend Elon College and Youth Achiever Stackhouse.
