Justice for God Devotional Reading: Ezekiel 18:25-32 Lesson Scripture: I Samuel 7: 3-11, 15-17 Lesson Aims: To see the need to put away idols; to recognize the power in keeping God first; and to keep our priorities straight. Background: Once the Israelites crossed the Jordan River under Joshua's lead, they began a quest for the land (Palestine/Canaan) God promised them. The book of Joshua chronicled that conquest. For an extended period of time after they controlled the land, the Israelites settled into their day to day routine. Life was pretty good, but their spiritual commitment (being faithful to God) began to weaken as they worshiped the Canaanite god. Judges, the seventh book in the Old Testament, recorded their swings between obedience to God and their oppression (God's Judgment) for turning away from Him. The writer told the stories of twelve judges (military leaders) who led them against their oppressors and back to God. Some scholars agree that this time period lasted about 350 years (Richard's Complete Bible Handbook). The final and greatest judge was Samuel who also served as priest and prophet. It was during his life that Israel got a king. Chapters 1-3 told of Samuel's early life. Mildred Peppers Sunday School Lesson the prophecy against the House of Eli, and God's call on his life. Israel's cycle of obedience, oppres sion, and repentance had continued. Chapters 4-6 recorded how Israel lost the Ark of the Covenant again. Their enemy, the Philistines, suffered because they had the Ark. Shortly thereafter, they returned it! Samuel inspired the people to renew their commitment to God. In lesson one, we defined "justice" as order that God seeks to reestablish in His creation where all are treated fairly and impartially^ Justice is a part of God's nature; shouldn't we practice that order towards Him? Lesson: Israel's unwise use of the Ark of the Covenant (an idol) in chapter 4: 1-11 is what started the See Peppers on B5 Deaconess Jeter Jeter to give first sermon SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Deaconess LaKeshia Evonne Lyons Jeter will give her Initial Sermon on Sunday, July 1 at 4 p.m. at New Generation Praise & Worship International Ministries. "When you get that many requests, there must be something to it so that's what we've done." He recently went into the studio with Steven McCoy and Pugh's long time producer, Michael Bereal, to create a new version of the Stellar Awards medley, which went on sale last week at popular online sites. The song will be the lead single on Kerry Douglas' forthcoming CD "Gospel Mix VI." "Pugh is a very forward thinker when it, comes to the timing and positioning of songs at radio to keep him relevant," says Blacksmoke Music Worldwide CEO Kerry Douglas. "This medley is a good look for both he and I." In another step towards giving his fans what they want, Pugh also created a dramatic con cept video of the new recording. Produced by Will Thomas at Jacksonville, Fla.-based Space Cherry Films, the setting is a recovery group meeting. ?? Blacksmoke Music Worldwide Photo Earnest Pugh performs at the Stellar Awards. "The individual songs speak truth on their own," says Pugh. "But, together, it really shows that the glory of the Lord is what brings us God's power to heal and renew us. So, of course, we'd then pray for God to rain those sorts of blessings on us and it really makes a powerful statement about what happens when we surrender ourselves to God."
