NCNW holds youth pageant SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) recently spon sored a youth pageant. The event, which served as a fundraiser for the NCNW's charitable activities, featured four young ladies showcasing their talents. Shateria Bantasia McCall, a third grade stu dent at Brunson Elementary School, was crowned the winner. She is the daughter of Ricky and the late Carnella McCall Galloway. She attends United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. When asked what is special about her, she said, "I am smart, outgoing and love my pastor. Rev. Prince R. Rivers." Shateria was sponsored by NCNW member Willie Kennedy trie other contestants were: ? Andria G. Ingram.Y daughter of Shelma Watson and Anderson Ingram Jr., is a third grader at Ashley Elementary School. Andria, who attends Shiloh Baptist Church, said her Grandma Gracie is the person she admires most. Andria was spon sored by NCNW member Dr. Manderline Scales. ? MaKayla Vera-Jean Griffin, daughter of Wayne and LaShonda Griffin, is a Winston Salem First pre-school student. She is described as an energetic little girl who loves to have fun Shateria Bantasia McCall holds the winner's trophy. and loves the Lord. MaKayla was sponsored by her great grandmother, "TmCNW member Mildred Griffin. ? RaJa Huntley, the daughter of LaShun Huntley and Regeania M. Huntley and a fifth grade honor student at The Downtown Elementary School, hopes to become a physician one day. She attends St. Paul United Methodist Church. Her favorite Bible verse is John 3:16. RaJa was sponsored by NCNW member Aurelia Worthy. The Pageant commit tee was made up of Annie Hamlin Johnson (coordi nator), Equilla Allen and Jacqueline Bethea. Past youin pageant contestants Trevon Standard Jones, Garrett Omar, Zion Bolden, Brandon Hunter and Anthony Hunter took part in the modeling por tion of the pageant. Members of the Winston-Salem Section of NCNW are soliciting new members and cam paigning to reclaim for mer members. Citizens' Police Academy taking applications SPECIAL TOTHE CHRONICLE The Police Department is accepting applications for the spring session of the Citizens' Police Academy, which will start April 4. The Citizens' Police Academy is a 13-week program that meets once a week to better acquaint citizens with the law enforcement profession and the role of the Police Department within the commu nity. The Citizens' Police Academy cur riculum is similar to training for new police officers, with a mix of classroom and scenario/hands-on training on such topics as department functions, search and seizure laws, use of force, firearms training, crime prevention, domestic violence, criminal investigations, vice/narcotics operations and K-9 and special operations. Participants will have an opportunity to ride with a patrol officer. The classes are taught by officers and civilian employees throughout the department. The weekly sessions are intended to help create a citizenry that is familiar and comfortable with the Police Department. The classes are not designed to train participants to be police officers. Classes will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday evenings at the Public Safety Center or the Alexander R. Beaty Public Safety Training and Support Center. Enrollment is open to any citizen 18 years of age or older who resides, works or attends school in Winston-Salem. Anyone interested in attending the Citizens' Police Academy may call the Winston Salem Police Department for an application at 336-773-7935, or complete an appli cation online at www.WSPD.org. The class is limited to 30 students. Applications must be submitted by March 1.
