Winston-Salem Urban League hosts 6Day of Caring' Submitted Photo Urban League CEO Keith Grandberry presents an award to Barbara Hayes. SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE _ In celebration of Black History Month, The Urban League, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, AARP and Gdavis Productions presented "A Day of Caring" on Feb. 28 at the Wake Forest Biotech Place. The program began with presentations by Dr. Lenwood Davis, author and historian; Dr. Phillip Morrow and Dr. Laura D. Baker of Wake Health; and Debra Tyier-Horton and . suzanne Black of AARP/NC. Wake Forest Baptist Health profes sionals conducted free health screenings and consultations for sen iors. During an awards ceremony, Lisa Long accepted the Outstanding Community Service Award on behalf of Wake Forest Baptist Health and CEO John D. McConnell. A moving tribute was made to the late Judge Roland Hayes that included remarks by City Council Member Dan Besse and District Court Judges Denise Hartsfield and Camille Banks Payne. Hayes' widow, Barbara, accepted the Black History Legacy Award. Mrs. Hayes made eloquent and gracious acceptance remarks, stat ing that her husband would have been humbled by the award and thanking the community for all of its support. The Hayeses' daughter Reba Warren, and grandsons Raines Warren and Roland Harris Hayes 111 were also in atten dance. The celebration concluded with a presentation of Garrett Davis' play "Mama's Girls." The play is supported by AARP's Prepare to Care program to help caregivers assemble an action plan for providing care for their family and themselves and to access care giving sup port services.
