Peppers
from pagt B4
mal was to be slain (with
no broken bones) and a
meal prepared to com
memorate their freedom.
The blood from the lamb
was to be smeared on the
doorposts and lintel of
each dwelling. This was
the sign for the Death
Angel (tenth plague) to
pass over their house
holds.
The specifics of the
meal (Feast of
Unleavened Bread) are
also found in Exodus 12.
God further instructed
Moses and Aaron to insti
tute these events as an
annual celebration, hand
ed down from generation
to generation. The blood
saved them and the meal
commemorated their
flight from Egypt. More
than a thousand years
iaici, iiic jcwj tumiiiucu
to celebrate Passover.
The atmosphere in
Jerusalem was becoming
more and more intense as
Jews poured into
Jerusalem for the obser
vance. Jesus and His dis
ciples went there also,
you see, His time had
come! On the first day of
the ? week (Christians'
Palm Sunday), Christ
made His triumphant
entry on a donkey. The
second day. He cleansed
the Temple. The third day
was not recorded in any
of the Gospels. On day
four, He ate the Passover
meal, instituting the
Lord's Supper; prayed in
the Garden of
Gethsemane; and was
arrested and taken to the
high priest. Jesus' trials
/
began as the crowd fol
lowed, anticipating His
response. Don't forget
that most of the followers
thought that He came to
overthrow Rome. That
was the purpose of
Messiah! What they wit
nessed more so than what
they heard demoralized
them.
The One who was
thought to be their deliv
erer died like a common
criminal! The hope that
was evident on the first
day of the week was
reduced to despair, disap
pointment and disillu
sionment. The darkness,
the earth quaking, and the
veil being torn from top
to bottom left His follow
ers in a very low place.
On the first day of the
next week, word spread
that the tomb was empty!
Lesson: When the
Sabbath was over, women
went to the tomb to finish
preparing the body. The
tomb was empty! They
immediately reported to
the disciples what they
saw and heard. The men
don't believe until they
go themselves. Later on
that day, two followers
are returning home to
Emmaus about seven
miles west of Jerusalem.
Still trying to make sense
of the events that unfold
ed during Passover, their
conversation draws Jesus
to them.
The pair informs the
stranger of the events
during the last three days.
As they continue towards
the village, Jesus
explains, beginning with
Moses through the
prophets what the
Scriptures saic^ about His
suffering and death. They
invite the stranger to
remain with them since
evening was approaching.
When they began to eat,
their eyes are opened and
they recognize Jesus! He
vanishes. As He spoke,
their hearts burned. The
New Jerome Biblical
Commentary states that
the burning comes from
their sadness being trans
formed into joy and
recommitment to Jesus!
They return to Jerusalem
immediately to report:
the Lord is risen!
Application: Even in
their despair, the two fol
lowers of Jesus are con
cerned about hospitality
towards a stranger.
Doesn't He say, "What
you've done to the least
of these, you've done
unto Me" (see Matthew
25: 34-40). Jesus is the
only One who is always
by our side. No matter
how bad it looks - don't
lose hope! In this life
there are all kinds of dis
tractions that will cloud
our view; knock us down;
and break our spirits.
Don't be fooled - Jesus,
our Redeemer - is always
there to give hope and
encouragement.
There will be times
when our faith wavers;
cry out to Him; He hears
and will come to see
about you. My hope is
built on nothing less than
Jesus Blood and
Righteousness! Through
Him and Him alone, we
can remain committed
because He lives! Amen?
Amen!
