Pan-Hellenic Council presents awards SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Winston Salem/Forsyth County National Pan-Hellenic Council observed Founders Day on Sunday, March 10. The observance began with worship service at Friendship Baptist Church and was followed by a community service awards program in the church's Fellowship Hall. The theme of this year's program was "Excellence in Fraternal Fellowship." The different organi zations of the Council selected members to be honored for their commu nity service contributions. The awardees were Donald L. Benson, Haley Gingles, James H. Patterson, Eleanor Bailey, ' Lincoln W. Harris, Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelly, Sonjia Samuels, Katisha Blackwell, Danetta J. Fitts and Dr. James W. Ferree. Greg Bradsher received an award for his leader ship in serving as past Council president. The Founders Day Committee consisted of Clevell S. Roseboro, Neisha Daniels, Norman Sanders and Evelyn Sanders. The local Pan Hellenic Council's com munity service activities ? Mel Watt (D-12th) recently hosted "Principles and Priorities" in the Global Learning Center at Bennett College. In a workshop led by the Concord Coalition, politicians, 12th District college students and faculty members were invited to participate in an interactive exercise that was designed to help them experience the real challenges faced by Congress in negotiating federal issues. Broader focus for Project We Care SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Project We Care, a program initiated by City Council Member and Mayor Pro Tempore Vivian H. Burke to recog nize individuals and agen cies that volunteer to serve others in need, is expanding its scope this year to honor up to seven outstanding community volunteers and their organizations. In addition to submit ting their total volunteer hours, program partici pants are being asked to submit a description of one project for which they are volunteering, to be submitted to a citizen committee for review. The committee will select the top seven initiatives and hold a special recog nition and reception at City Hall honoring the winners and their proj ects. Participants are asked to provide film/disk/video/photos of their event suitable for being shown at the recep tion. All entries must be received by June 30. A form for recording volunteer hours and par ticipating in Project We Care is posted at www.CityofWS.org and follow the links to the Community and Business Development Department.
