School supply drive a success \ SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Alpha Mu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc.. held its annual end of the year cookout in support of "Operation BigBookbag," which is one of the sorority's national programs. The event took place at the Fourth of July Park in Kernersville, where residents were invited to come out to fellowship, enjoy food provided by the chapter and donate school supplies to the effort. This event received an overwhelming response, including lots of support from other National Pan Hellenic Council organi zations such as Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Incorporated. The Alpha Mu Sigma Chapter intends to dis tribute the donated sup plies to schools surround ing the LaOeara Crest Estates community. where sorority Life Member Naomi Jones has been a staple in the com munity. 71 nwHVJi H 1 ? Museum's upcoming Salon talks SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The New Winston Museum is continuing its free bi-monthly Salon Series talks featuring a broad range of local historians, artists, writers, musicians, crafts folk and other specialists. Speakers discuss aspects of their work and their process to find interpersonal con nections with their work to the broader community. I ne salon series events engage the audience to participate and gain greater insight into the experience. The mission of the New Winston Museum is to preserve the cultural history of Winston Salem and Forsyth County, and to inspire our citizens to incorpo rate our past in creating a great future for our community. Its exhibits and programs will emphasize the recent past - the time within the memories of our oldest citizens. The museum's regular hours are Monday - Friday from 12-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Salon Series talks are held the second and fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. The New Winston Museum is located at 713 S. Marshall St. The following talks are slated this month and next month: McCoy Mundy ? Thursday, July 11 (today), "The Sawtooth School: What Goes On Under That Jagged Roof?" featuring Kevin Mundy on the history of the art school and a demonstration from one of the School's instructors: ? Thursday, July 27, Carol Strohecker, director of the Center for Design Innovation, will share her vision for the Winston-Salem based Center; ? Thursday, August 8, "Better Blocks Ahead" with Paula McCoy of the Winston-Salem Funders Collaborative talking about how local community development corporations (CDCs) are creating paths for social and economic vitality: ? Thursday, August 22, "Foodways & Roadways" with Margaret Savoca discussing the evolving initia tive seeking to educate residents about food availabil ity and social justice in Winston-Salem's underserved communities.
