YCFL registration The Youth Character Football League (YCFL), an outreach ministry of Union Baptist Church, is holding registration for the 2013 season. Practice begins Monday, July 29 for boys and girls, ages 5-14 years old. The league has both flag and contact football teams, cheerleading and dance. The YCFL allows boys and girls to participate in an organized sports activ ity and provides a posi tive athletic experience that builds character. Boys & Girls Club earns 'Bridges' award SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Salvation Army Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club of Winston-Salem has been honored with the Building Bridges award for its club members' out standing improvement in scholastic excellence. The award is given each year to only one Boys & Girls Club in North and South Carolina whose program is deemed exceptionally wor thy by The Salvation Army. "Academic success is one of our top priorities at The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club so when we receive an honor like this, we know we are moving in the right direction with our community's youth," said Major James Allison, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Winston-Saleny "We are so proud of our club mem bers who worked hard to reach their goals." The Building Bridges award is measured by The I Salvation Army's Boys & Girls Club's R.E.A.C.H. (Reading, Education, Attendance, Conduct, Honors) program. It is designed to motivate, rec ognize and reward scholas tic excellence while pro viding special attention to those at-risk. Each student is award ed one point for an improved grade in academ ics, conduct or atten dance. Of the 201 club members enrolled this school year at The Salvation Army Ken Carlson Boys & Girls Club, 48 percent of the stu dents improved their GPA this past school year. In addition, 26 percent of the students in the program improved their attendance at school for the 2012 2013 school year. The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs are celebrating 75 years of serving the Winston-Salem community this year.
