The final plague broke the pharaoh's back - he released the Children of Israel from bondage. Lesson: God decides their exit route (Exodus 3:17, 18), for the people must now be prepared to enter the Promised Land. Once Israel leaves, pharaoh has a change of heart (also in God's plan). He orders his soldiers to bring them back. When the people see the Egyptians in pursuit and the sea in front of them, they i turn on Moses. In reality, they turn from God, because they have little faith. We've been there. Moses reassures them that God will fight on their behalf all they have to do is fear not, stand firm (faithful) and be still. The lead angel goes to the rear to confuse the Egyptians, thus slowing them down. Moses stretches out his hand and the strong east wind blows. The peo ple are told to cross over on dry land. The Egyptians, in hot pursuit follow them. At this point, the Egyptians acknowledge the true God before the Israelites do! Moses lifts his hand again and the "walled water" swallows the enemy completely. Moses and the people all witness this and recognize that God is The Almighty and is with them. The cri sis is over and their faith in God is restored. God alone has saved them! Application: Moses and the parting of the Red Sea are central for the Israelites in the Old Testament. Their first steps of freedom indicate that God is more powerful than any superpower and He keeps His promises. Now. on the other side of the water, what will His people do? When we find ourselves in desperate situations, what do we do? God is no respector of persons; He loves and cares for His creation. We are free - do we choose wisely or foolishly? Every ' time He delivers, our faith should mature. Do we tell our story to the next generation? Freedom is much more than a list of do's and don'ts. The lesson today hinges on physical and emotional bondage. Our freedom has expanded to include not only free dom from the Mosaic Law but physical, emotional and economic chains that cripple us. God has the power to free us from anything that hinders our growth. Our freedom centers on worship, love, grace and justice. Amen for freedom!
