The movie is based on the true story of Solomon -Northup, a free black Northern man who is abduct ed and sold into slavery in the ? South. Following the movie, a Q&A session will be held with local scholars and histo ? rians, including Dr. Michael Hartley, director of Archaeology at Old Salem Museums & Gardens; Dr. Donna Benson, professor of history at Winston-Salem State University; and Dr. Anthony Parent, professor of history and American ethnic studies at Wake Forest University. Set in the pre-Civil War era, the film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Northup and Brad Pitt as the Canadian abolition ist who helps Northup gain his freedom. The Delta Arts Center will sponsor an address by Shonda Buchanan titled "Black Native Americans in North Carolina" today (Thursday Nov. 14) at 6 p.m. : iOn Friday Nov. 15 at 1 p.m., she will conduct a talk about "Lakota Quilts & The Craft of Quilting." Buchanan is an award-winning poet, fiction writer, creative nonfiction essayist and editor of "Voices from Leimert Park: A Poetry Anthology." She is an Eloise Klein-Healy Scholarship recipient, a Sundance Institute fellow and a PEN Center Emerging Voice fel low. She has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and several grants from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. A former managing editor of Turning Point Magazine. Buchanan is an assistant professor in the Department of English it Hampton University, leaching fiction, poetry, nar rative nonfiction, senior seminar, composition and magazine writing.
