to display
acclaimed
exhibit
SPECIAL TO THE

On Monday, Nov. 18
at 1 p.m. Forsyth
Technical Community
College will host the
exhibit, "Walk of
Immigrants," a nationally
acclaimed "image narra
tive" created by photog
rapher Saul Flores based
on his journey across 10
Latin American coun
tries. The presentation
will take place in the
Auditorium of Oak Grove
Center (the former
WS/FCS Career Center)
on Forsyth Tech's Main
Campus, 2100 Silas
Creek Parkway.
The . presentation,
which is a part of Forsyth
Tech's Humanities &
Social Sciences Speaker
Series, is free and open to
the public.
During the presenta
tion, Flores, a graduate of
NC State University, will
talk about his walk,
which began in Quito,
Ecuador in the summer of
2010 and ended in his
hometown of Charlotte,
NC, three months and
5,326 miles later.
During this time, he
took 20,000 photographs
to capture the cultural
values, struggles and
most prominent issues of
the Latin American coun
tries he visited. He will
share photos and the sto
ries of the people he met
along the way as a way to
communicate cultural
empathy and demonstrate
the commonalities that
exist between cultures.
His journey has been
featured on NPR, TEDx
and in major print publi
cations.

QEA honors 'Legacy' contributors

Quality Education
Academy held its 12th
Annual Legacy Banquet
on Saturday, Nov. 2 in its
new auditorium.
Themed, "The
Growth of a Legacy," the
event celebrated the con
tributions of 25 families
to the mission of QEA.
Those honored have
donated their time, talent
and at least $400 to the
acclaimed charter school.
The Legacy program at
Quality Education
Academy allows the
school to have the finan
cial resources, talent and
moral support necessary
to provide the type of
education its students
need.
Judge Denise
Hartsfield served as the
mistress of ceremonies,
and Monica Ross of QEA
introduced the members
the "Legacy Families" to
the audience. She also
presented specially com
missioned portraits of the
2013 Legacy Hero and
Heroine, Mr. and Mrs.
Errol Hinds.
"We began (the)
Legacy (program) 14
years ago out of a need to
recognize our own, those
who come from our com
munity. When 1 speak of
our own, I am talking
about in every aspect of
the way," said QEA CEO
Simon Johnson. "We
need to recognize people
from our city, our com
munity, our friends, our
neighbors and our kin
folk."
Johnson quoted an
old African proverb to
put the celebration in
perspective: "Until the
lion becomes the histori
an, the hunter will
always be the hero."
QEA Head Basketball
Coach Isaac Pitts gave a
special thank-you, and
the QEA Jazz Band,
under the direction of
Willie Lewis, performed.
Closing remarks were
given by Johnson and
Minister Cloys R. Cecil
Sr. of Carver Road
Church of Christ.
