Family honors Anthony on
her 80th birthday

Evelyn Tatum
Anthony celebrated her
80th birthday on
Saturday, Nov. 16 in the
fellowship hall of Center
Grove AME Zion Church
in Tobaccoville.
Family and friends,
festooned in shades of
green, gathered for the
occasion. Each guest
brought a single flower
tribute. Together, they
formed a beautiful bou
quet for this virtuous
woman.
The first child of
Elizabeth and Howard
Tatum of Pinnacle,
Anthony was born on
Nov. 18, 1933. She is the
mother of Darion
Anthony Curry of
Jacksonville, Fla and
Edward Tyrone Anthony
of Winston-Salem and
has been blessed with
three grandsons, two
granddaughters and a
great-grandson. Anthony
is a R.J. Reynolds retiree.
Anthony's elegant
entrance into the room
was accompanied by the
song, "Moma...You
Know I Love You."
Evangelist Caroline
Scales gave the opening
prayer. Tributes to
Anthony included an
original poem recited by
grandson Devon Anthony
and a musical tribute by
grandchildren Lundon B.
Sims and Isaiah Anthony.
Granddaughter Jordan
Anthony read Proverbs
31 and Caleb Anthony,
Anthony's other grand
son, served as his grand
mother's chauffer and
escort, along with Mrs.
Anthony's brother,
William Tatum.
Christine Porter,
Anthony's sister, sang a
tribute, while her brother,
Rev. James Tatum, said
grace. Her brother,
William and his wife,
Rev. Juanita Tatum of Mt.
Moriah Baptist Church,
also gave a rousing trib
ute. Douglas Lightfoot,
also of Mt. Moriah, deliv
ered final remarks and
the closing prayer. A
slideshow chronicling her
life was also shown.
Refreshments and the
birthday cake were
catered and cut by her
sisters-in-law, Mary
Debnam, Drucilla
Pittman and Rev. Tatum.
Guests included
Anthony's high school
classmates, members of
Mt. Moriah (where
Anthony attends), Center
Grove and the Red Hat
Society and Anthony's
bowling league compan
ions.

its endorsement of and
participation in the fourth
annual Small Business
Saturday on Nov. 30.
Created by American
Express in 2010, Small
Business Saturday is a day
dedicated to supporting
small businesses nation
wide. Celebrated every
year on the Saturday after
Thanksgiving, the day has
given small businesses
across the country a huge
boost.
Recognizing the
importance of supporting
small independentfy
owned businesses in our
community, DADA is
pleased to announce our
support for Small
Business Saturday, Local
Artists and its
Neighborhood Champion
Program.
Residents of the
greater Winston-Salem
area are encouraged to

Carver seniors to host
holiday luncheon

The Carver Senior Citizens Club will have its
Annual Christmas Luncheon on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at
the Carl H. Russell Sr. Community Center, 3521
Carver School Rd? at 11 "a.m. Newly-elected officers
of the club, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary,
will be installed during the program. Sen. Earline
Parmon will speak.
This has been a very productive year for the club,
having helped District 5 host the recent North Carolina
Association of Senior Citizens Clubs' (NCASCC) State
Conference at the Ramada Inn in Winston-Salem.
The club placed second in the conference's scrap
book competition. Annie M. Campbell chaired the
scrapbook committee, which also included Grade Jo
Byrd, Claudette Eldridge, Mary Oliver, JoAnn Sanders
and Rudolph V. Boone Sr.
The current club leaders are: Rudolph V. Boone Sr.
(president), Carrie Bardwell (vice president), Juanita
Pitts (recording secretary), Gracie Jo Byrd ( assistant
recording secretary), Lauretta Fennell(corresponding
secretary), Willie Mae Gaddy (financial secretary),
Sarah J. Boone (treasurer), Mary Douthit (assistant
treasurer), Robert Byrd (parliamentarian) and Janet
Carroll (chaplain). Beverly Ligons is the club's advi
