Grant helping Paisley hold health fair Saturday SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE ? The National PTA has recognized Paisley IB Magnet School PTSA with a $1,000 grant for its efforts to strengthen family engagement during PTA Take Your Family to School Week. The Paisley PTSA is one of only 51 PTAs, nationwide and in Europe, selected to receive a grant. Being recognized with a grant demonstrates Paisley's PTSA leadership and commitment to build ing family-school partnerships to support student sue cess and school improvement. "Decades of research shows that when families and schools work together, student achievement increases, schools improve and communities grow stronger," said National PTA President Otha Thornton. "PTA Take Your Family to School Week is designed to spotlight the importance of family-school partnerships and expand and enhance family engagement efforts in schools across the country. We are pleased to recog nize the hard work and dedication of Paisley's PTSA to ensure families are involved in their children's school, during PTA Take Your Family to School Week and throughout the year." During PTA Take Your Family to School Week, Paisley's PTSA will host a free Health and Fitness Fair that is open to the public on Saturday, Feb. 22 from 10 - a.m. - 2 p.m. at Paisley, 1400 Grant Ave. The fair will host 20 vendors which will be offering services such as free cholesterol, blood pressure and glucose screenings. There will be many fun and informative activities. PTA Take Your Family to School Week reinforces PTA's legacy and mission to promote children's educational success and health and well-being through strong family involvement. Hispanic Dems discussion "Helping Hispanics/Latinos with Important Family Issues" is the theme of a Wednesday, Feb. 26 gath ering of the Forsyth County Hispanic American Democrats. It will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 660 W. Fifth St. Topics like SAT prep and college entrance and the home buying process will be dis cussed. Hall applications being accepted The Winston Salem/Forsyth County Sports Hall of Fame is accepting applications for its 2014 class. Applications, portfolios and sports resumes should be submitted to the Winston-Salem Sportsmen Club Hall of Fame Committee at P.O. Box 4352, W-S, N.C., 27115 4353 on or before March 4. Applications are avail able at local high schools, at the Winston Lake Family YMCA on Tuesdays between 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. (when the Sportsmen Club meets) or online at www.wssports menclub.org. Fisher to speak Forsyth Republican Women will welcome Republican National Committeewoman Dr. Ada Fisher on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the main auditorium of Forsyth Tech West Campus, 1300 Bolton St. Her topic will be "Helping Folks Awaken Their Inner Republican." The event is free and open to the public. Salem BHM program Salem College and BADU (Black Americans Demonstrating Unity) will host a Black History Month show on Friday, Feb. 28 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. It will include historical presentations, African dance, contemporary dance, song, skits and spo ken word. A dinner recep tion follows. Tickets are $5 in advance for adults and $7 at the door. Tickets are $3 for kids ages 4?10 and free for those 3 and under. Omega Talent Hunt applications The annual Omega Psi Phi Talent Hunt Contest will take place on Sunday, March 9 at 3 p.m. at the Anderson Center at Winston-Salem State University. Changes for neighborhood Southside coalition SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The former South Winston-Salem Community Coalition has a new name and new officers. The New South Community Coalition, as it is now known, elected its first African American president. Robert Leak HI. Leak is the president of the Laston Neighborhood Association and a newly appointed Winston-Salem Human Relations Commission member. The vice president is Carolyn Highsmith, president of the Konnoak Hills Community Association and a recent candidate for City Council. Neighborhood advocates Natresha Lemon and Jesse Adams are the new secretary and new treasurer, respectively. The New South Community Coalition brings together community advocates devoted to a vision of promoting and improving the Leak quality of life, health and safety of each and every citizen living in the diverse neighborhoods of Winston-Salem, though the focus is primari ly on the neighborhood communities of South Winston-Salem. The mission of the New South Community Coalition is to develop an engaged and informed constituency that will work to create and main tain the integrity, character and beauty of these neighborhoods.
