< )ld Salcin Phdo Egg dyeing at Old Salem SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Old Salem Museums & Gardens will kick off Easter week with a drop-in egg dyeing class. Visitors will have the opportunity to dye their own Easter eggs using historic dyes on Saturday, April 12-at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in the Vierling Barn, 463 Church St. Each class will last approximately 30 minutes. Participants will dye three eggs using cabbage, onion skins, and madder for the dyes. Please note that due to the time it takes to achieve the color on the eggs participants will not be taking home their own egg, but will receive three examples using the same tech niques. The cost of the class, paid at the door, is $10 per person. Classes are first come, first served and are limited to 20 people per time slot. Children must be at least six years old to participate in the class, and everyone who is admitted to the class must pay the $10 entry fee. Anyone under age 18 must be accompa nied by a paying adult. Goldwater Scholarship for Aggie SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE N.C. A&T engineering student Kris Wiedenheft has been awarded the 2014 Goldwater Scholarship from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. Wiedenheft is the sec ond A&T student and the first College of Engineering student to win the highly sought after scholarship. This year, the Goldwater Scholarship was awarded to approxi mately 283 college sopho mores and juniors in the United States, selected from a field of 1,166 stu dents who were nominated by their universities. The award provides students with a maximum grant of $7,500 that will cover tuition, fees, books and room and board. "This is an outstanding achievement. We are extremely proud of Kris for being the College of Engineering's first Goldwater Scholarship recipient. She is an exam ple of the talented, well rounded, high-achieving engineers that we are dedi cated to producing." said Dr. Robin Coger, dean of the College of Engineering. Wiedenheft, a native of Connecticut, is a junior mechanical engineering student. She transferred to the university after earning an associate's degree in engineering science at Hudson Valley Community College. Before transfer ring to A&T, Wiedenheft worked as a mechanical technician at the research and development facility i of Prestone Products. She is performing research in fluid physics (capillary physics space experiment) through a joint NASA funded research project with the A&T Astronautics Thermal & Fluids Research Team and Purdue University. "Winning the Goldwater scholarship emphasizes my commit ment to academic excel lence and research and demonstrates my ability to achieve my career goals. The financial aspects of this award will enable me to pursue my education and research through the upcoming school year." said Wiedenheft. She is also a participant of the North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NC-LSAMP) at A&T. This summer. Wiedenheft will intern with the research department of the Chemical Combustion and Fluid Flight Systems Group at Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Her ultimate goal is to earn a PhD in aerospace engineering and to conduct research in fluid physics and fluid modeling Wiedenheft at a national laboratory or research institution. Coger thanked faculty and staff - Drs. Devdas Pai, John Kizito, Marcia Williams and Anna Whiteside - who support ed and mentored Wiedenheft through the process. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and cer emonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physi cal fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included develop ment of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crew man. Stoddard is the son of Brad and Carolyn Stoddard and a 2013 graduate of West Forsyth High School. Air Force Airman Harleigh N. Stafford graduat ed from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an Stafford associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
