Students trek to school SPECIAL TO THE CHRONK I I Continuing a tradition started in 2008, Kimberley Park Elementary School held its first Walk to School Day of 2014 on Wednesday, April 9. The weather was per fect for the 109 students who took part. Each stu dent was given a partici pation sticker they could wear with pride through out the school day* along with a special wristband. Walking and/or biking to school is an important part of Safe Routes to School (SRTS), an inter national program that encourages communities to make it safer for more children to walk and bike to school. The goals of the program are to reduce or prevent childhood obe sity and to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality around schools. Currently, North Carolina ranks 15th in the country for its high rate of childhood obesity. Grants awarded to youth projects II SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Youth Grantmakers in Action (YGA) hosted its annual grant celebra tion event on April 16 at the Winston Salem/Forsyth County Schools Career Center. YGA announced Five grants totaling $2,010 that were made to positive proj ects that will help the youth of Forsyth County come together to make a differ ence in the community. The Baker's Dozen received $550 to perform a play that will benefit The Children's Theater's Scholarship Fund. The Forsyth Middle College Prom Committee was granted $500 for its first Junior/Senior Prom. The Poverty Simulation Group received $320 to host a poverty simulation for students to increase awareness of the effects of poverty. Students Making a Right Turn (S.M.A.R.T) was granted $320 to host a fashion show in order to raise funds for youth programs. The Winston-Salem Youth Advisory Council received $320 to provide bags filled with clothing, s. food, and other essential supplies for J homeless youth. YGA is a diverse group of youth ages 15-18 from all over Forsyth County who want to gain leadership experience, represent the youth of the community, and grant money to youth led community projects that will have a positive impact on the community. A program of The Winston-Salem Foundation, YGA was formed in 2005 from the vision of Dr. Nathaniel Irvin and the financial support of Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. Since its first round of grants was made in 2006. YGA has granted over $16,000 to youth-led community projects.
