Students trek to school
SPECIAL TO THE
CHRONK I I
Continuing a tradition
started in 2008,
Kimberley Park
Elementary School held
its first Walk to School
Day of 2014 on
Wednesday, April 9.
The weather was per
fect for the 109 students
who took part. Each stu
dent was given a partici
pation sticker they could
wear with pride through
out the school day* along
with a special wristband.
Walking and/or biking
to school is an important
part of Safe Routes to
School (SRTS), an inter
national program that
encourages communities
to make it safer for more
children to walk and bike
to school. The goals of
the program are to reduce
or prevent childhood obe
sity and to reduce traffic
congestion and improve
air quality around
schools. Currently, North
Carolina ranks 15th in the
country for its high rate
of childhood obesity.
The local Safe Routes
to School program is
sponsored by the City of
Winston-Salem
Department of
Transportation
(WSDOT).
