Davis lectures
about Price
SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE ?
Dr. Lenwood G. Davis, an independent scholar and
resident of Winston-Salem, recently spoke at the North
Carolina Association of Historians Annual Meeting at the
College of Albemarle in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
His topic was "Joseph Charles Price: The World's Orator
and Founder of Livingstone College." The meeting was
sponsored by both the college of Albemarle and Elizabeth
City State University.
Price was one of the best known
African American leaders, after
Frederick Douglas, between 1880
1892. He was friends with the most
influential white and African
American leaders during his day,
including Simon Green Atkins, the
j founder of Winston-Salem State
University. Dr. Atkins taught at
i Livingstone College between 1884
? - 1890. In 1890, Price founded the
Southland magazine and selected
a
Davis
/\imiis as us cunor.
Price attended the Methodist Ecumenical Conference
in London, England, and after a five minute speech. The
London Times called him, "The World's Orator." After
lecturing in England, he returned in the fall of 1892, hav
ing $10,000 above his expenses. The A.M.E. Zion Board
of Bishops selected Price as president of Zion Wesley
Institute. The college resumed classes on October 9,
1882. It was Price's fundraising efforts that resulted in the
founding of Livingstone College, and it was at his urging
that the Board of Trustees voted to change the name of
Zion Wesley Institute to Livingstone College in 1882. The
changing of the name of the college honored a generous
donation to the school by David Livingstone and his native
England.
Davis has taught at Livingstone, Portland State
University, Ohio State University, WSSU, the University
of Delaware and Montclair College. He is the author of 23
books, including " Joseph Charles Price and Livingstone
?College," and more than 150 articles, essays, bibliogra
phies and book reviews.
