Nine volunteer awards presented SPECIAL TO THE CHRONIC! E HandsOn Northwest North Carolina, in part nership with the United Way of Forsyth County. Salem College and The Winston-Salem Journal, presented the 2014 Governor's Volunteer Service Awards on Thursday, May 14 at Salem College's Bryant Hall. Winners were selected by a,volunteer committee from a diverse pool of nominations. The award recipients are: Cheryl Lindsay (Individual Adult Volunteer), Don Adamick (National Service Volunteer), Diana Heatwole (Senior Volunteer). Woodforest National Bank (Corporate Volunteer), Patricia Call (Lifetime Achievement Volunteer), Roger Lynn Jordan (Perseverance in Volunteerism). The Stanley Brothers (Family Volunteers), Chad Brown (Outstanding Mentor Volunteer), and the VFW Memorial Honor Guard (Group or Team Volunteers). These volunteers give their time to a variety of different organizations and schools. Lindsay won for her leadership work with the American Heart Association. Adamick won for organizing more than 30 blood drives for the Armed Services Blood Program. Heatwole was honored for her years, of service to Mineral Springs Elementary School. Woodforest National Bank was recognized for its ongoing, consistent volunteer support of Second Harvest Food Bank ofNWNC. Call won for her 11 years of volun teering within the halls of Old Town Elementary School. Jordan was recog nized for his efforts to give back to others deal ing with cancer diagnoses at Wake Forest Baptist Health. Through his men toring relationship at Big Brothers Big Sisters, Brown has turned around the life of his "Little." The Stanley Brothers make sure that the SECU Family House is running smoothly and ready to provide hospitality for those who have loved ones in the hospital. Lastly, the members of the VFW Honor Guard were honored for tireless efforts to provide full mil itary honors at more than 100 funerals and other events each year. The Governor's Volunteer Service Awards were first awarded by the Governor's Office and its Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service in 1979. The award honors citizens who have shown significant concern and compassion for their neighbors through volun teer service. "1 SPECIAL ro THE CHRONICLE The local section of the National Council of Negro Women. Inc. recently donated toiletries to residents of Trinity Glen, a nursing home facility on Waterworks Road. The donations were accepted by Trinity Glen Life Enrichment Coordinator Robin Hermida and deliv ered by NCNW Section NC State Convener and First Vice President Jean Moses-Petree. President Doris Herrell and Dr. Manderline Scales, a longtime NCNW member. The National Council of Negro Women's purpose is to help women, children and families. The purpose was instituted by founder and organizer Mary McLeod Bethune; the late Dorothy 1. Height, the group's longtime chairwoman; and current Chairwoman Ingrid Saunders-Jones.
