Church prepares lunches for Bethesda clients SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE On Friday, May 16, the Outreach Ministry of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church distributed more than 100 bag lunches to residents of the Bethesda Center, a homeless shelter on Patterson Avenue. The nutritious lunches included turkey and cheese sandwiches, potato chips, oatmeal cookies, apples and bottled waters. Recipients, who also received a flyer about St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church and an invitation to attend worship services there, were gen uinely appreciative of the gesture. The Outreach Ministry's effort was guided by Matthew 25:35, which instructs believers to feed the hungry. St. Stephen operates a Food Pantry and Clothing Closet that are open to the public on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. St. Stephen, whose mission is "We are Family. We Care. We Share and We Work Together in LOVE," is located at 5000 Noble St. Rev. James E. Cook is the church's senior pastor. Caesar packs them in SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE First Lady of Gospel Shirley Caesar brought down the house on May 16 with her stirring performance at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Caesar regaled a crowd of more than 700 during the more than two hour-long concert, which was offered to the local community free of charge by Forsyth Jail and Prison Ministries. During the concert, a love offering was collected in support of the Ministry, which has a 35-plus year his tory of providing Christian focused programming and support to inmates in Forsyth County and their families. A veteran performer and member of the North Carolina Gospel Music Hall of Fame, Caesar cut her teeth as a solo gospel performer in 1966 and has been lighting up stages the world over with her message of hope and salvation ever since. Known for hits like "Hold My Mule" and "He's Working it Out for You," the Shaw University alumna and Durham native has secured her place in gospel music history with a host of accolades. including 11 Grammys, 13 Stellar and 18 Dove awards. Despite her legendary sta tus, Caesar doesn't mind shar ing the spotlight. During her performance, she offered the microphone to dozens of attendees, inviting them to sing along with her. Members of FJPM's own Cherry Street Ensemble, a choir made up of current and former Forsyth Correctional Center inmates, also shared the stage with Caesar. When the time came to lake the offering, Caesar led the charge to support FJPM by presenting a personal check to Senior Chaplain Rodney Stilwell. Hanchell has released a new book, "Women of Wisdom-WOW! 24 Karat Nuggets of Wisdom for Women." It offers advice to help women ascend to leadership and lead with wisdom. "It is one thing to attain status or tmngs in nie, out it is a com pletely different battle to maintain your status as a leading woman," the author says. Golden nuggets of advice are provided to women of all ages who lead in their home, business, church, school and beyond. SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Twin City Choristers will help Mount Zion Baptist Church celebrate its 125th anniversary on Sunday, June 1 by performing a spirited concert at 4 p.m. Their performance will culmi nate a month of special anniversary activities at Mt. Zion, which was founded in 1889 by a group of Virginia singers. The Twin City Choristers, an ail male group composed of some of the finest singers in this area, was founded by the late Dr. Permilla Flack Duncan. Under her musical shaping and the mastery of subse quent directors, the group has per formed in churches, schools, con cert halls, and arts theatres through out this area and in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
