Residents urged to fight hunger

Second Harvest Food Bank
of Northwest North Carolina
and its partner agencies were
honored with a proclamation
signed by Mayor Allen Joines on
Sept. 1. The mayor proclaimed
September as "Hunger Action
Month" and presented the
proclamation to Deacon James
Paul of the New Jerusalem
Missionary Baptist during a
recent City Council meeting.
Paul accepted on behalf of
Second Harvest and the New
Jerusalem Food Pantry, one of
the Food Bank's partner agen
cies.
"I am very proud to accept
this proclamation on behalf of
Second Harvest and all its part
ners," Paul said. "Our efforts are
truly labors of love."
The proclamation acknowl
edges that hunger and poverty
are public health issues of criti
cal concern here in Winston
Salem and throughout the nation
and that inadequate nutrition
diminishes the capacity of chil
dren to learn, exacerbates health
conditions among seniors and
others and saps the strength of
working families. One in six res
idents of North Carolina is food
insecure and the problem of
hunger is even more significant
among children.
Second Harvest Food Bank
of Northwest North Carolina is
the Feeding America affiliate
that, along with its partner pro
grams, is committed to engaging
community members and organ
izations in addressing the prob
lem of hunger and providing
resources to meet the needs of
local residents. New
Jerusalem's Food Pantry is a
prime example and effective
source in feeding the communi
ty

Salem citizens to support the
work of Second Harvest Food
Bank and its partners.

The Women's Ministry of Goler

Chit Chat & All That Sistah's Breakfast &
Table Talk on Saturday. Sept.
27 from 9 a.m. - noon at the
Goler Enrichment Center next
to the church.
This spirit-filled event is
designed to help motivate and
empower women to create new
spiritual perspectives when
facing issues that beset them
on a daily basis. This year's
theme. "Moving Beyond Our
Mountains, will expound
upon techniques women can
use while feeling stuck "between a rock
and a hard place" and are unable to cope.
Table topics will include "50 Shades of
Grey," "Dancing To The Beat of A
Different Drum." "Social Butterflies" and
more.
Rev. Lucille Mechelle Myers will
speak She is an ordained Elder in the
African American Methodist Episcopal
Zion Church and an alumna of Hood
Theological Seminary, where she earned
the Master of Divinity and a Theological
Studies Degree. She is pursuing a post
master's Theology of Ministry degree at
the Emory University Candler Theological
Seminary in Atlanta.
Myers is currently VP of the
Hood Theological Seminary
Alumni Association in Salisbury.
She has served as the ecumenical
coordinator to the N.C. Council
of Churches for the Eastern NC
Episcopal District of the AME
Zion Church and special assistant
and liturgist to Bishop Richard
K. Thompson for the South
African, Zimbabwe & Swaziland
Annual Conference.
Her pastorates have included
Weslev Chapel AME Zion
Church in Lillington and New England
AME Zion Church in Sanford. Myers is
the president and founder of the Lucille M.
McSwain Foundation, a nonprofit organi
zation focused on literacy and depression.
Those who know her best call her
"Lady Lemonade" because she takes life's
lemons and makes lemonade. Myers is
married to Rufus J. Myers.

Wanda Jean Holmes Williams on Sunday, Sept.
28 at 4 p.m.
A native of Winston-Salem. Williams gradu
ated from Livingstone College with a degree in
education. Williams received her calling from the
Lord in 1998 to preach. After being ordained a
deacon in the
Christian Methodist
Episcopal (CME)
Church in 2001. she
completed
the Bishop School
for Ministers and
received a Certificate
of Theology from the
Interdenominational
Theological Center
in Atlanta. She is cur
rently enrolled
in online courses
with Ames The Williamses
International School
of Ministry in Fort Myers, Fla.
Williams is the co-pastor of CHRIST
Community Outreach Ministries, where her hus
band. Rev. Nathaniel P.J. Williams Jr., is the pas
tor. She previously served as an associate pastor
for Faith Unity Missionary Church for almost six
years. Prior to that, Williams was a local minister
at St. John CME Church, where she was a mem
ber of the Board of Ministers, the Stewardess
Board, the Outreach Ministry, the Food Bank
Ministry, the minister for the Liturgical Dance
Ministries, a Sunday School teacher and a class
leader. She also has two ministries at R.J.
Reynolds High School - Young Ladies of Virtue
and Young Men of Standard.
The Williamses have been married for 35
years. They have two children, Nathaniel P. J.
(La'Rhonda) Williams 111 and Brittany Marie
Williams; a grandson. Nathaniel P.J. Williams IV,
and a granddaughter. Marianna Lanae V.
