Main Street Academy
recently welcomed Navy
Ensign James Barksdale.
He spoke to male stu
dents about leadership
and responsibility. The
son of James and Renee
Barksdale of Charlotte,
Ensign Barksdale gradu
ated from Hopewell High
School in Huntersville,
where he played varsity
football and received a
football scholarship to
North Carolina Central
University.
He was a three-year
starter at NCCU, where
he played defensive back.
Barksdale had dreams of
playing in the NFL, but
he chose a career in the
U.S. Navy instead.
He is just 25, but his
career in the Navy has
been action-packed and
has included serving as
?
an Electronic Weapons
Officer on the U.S.S.
Gettysburg during a nine
month deployment.
Barksdale encouraged
students to, "Take control
of your future by exercis
ing self-discipline
and good character."
Students asked
Barksdale many ques
tions and spoke openly to
him about their goals.
Barksdale encouraged
them to set goals and
begin to take steps to
ensure those goals
become reality.
Barksdale is married
to Christina Barksdale,
the daughter of Adolphus
and Valerie Coplin. Mr.
Coplin is a retired
Winston-Salem/Forsyth
County Schools princi
pal. Mrs. Coplin teaches
at Main Street Academy.

Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont will cele
brate a day of Girl Scounting and community involve
ment on Sunday, Oct. 5, and the public is invited to
attend.
Girl Scouts will be stationed at intervals along a
one mile stretch of the Silas Creek Greenway (which

Yorkshire Road and
Sherwood Forest Road,
and will demonstrate a
variety of hands-on
activities, including
games, crafts, science
experiments and outdoor
skills.

ties, will have a chance to earn a special patch to com
memorate the event. Representatives from the local
council. Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont, will
be on hand to answer questions about Girl Scouting
and to accept new members.
The celebration begins at 2 p.m. Parking is avail
able at the adjacent Parkway Presbyterian Church.
This event is free and open to the public. Attendees
are encouraged to bring gently used clothing and
household items to benefit Goodwill Industries of
Northwest North Carolina as part of the Girl Scouts
annual "Good Turn for Goodwill" drive.
