WSSU Choir completes goodwill trip to South Africa SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem State University Choir recently returned from a successful trip to Johannesburg, South Africa. The group per formed as part of the research project called "Singin' Black and White." "The project is designed to make better choral music and build better community at the same time by combining both efforts (predomi nately black and white choirs) in innovative ways," said D'Walla Simmons Burke, director of choral and vocal stud ies at WSSU. During the trip, the WSSU Choir performed for and with other choirs in Johannesburg and Cape Town, including the The Wits Choir, The Cape Town Youth Choir and Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls' Choir. One WSSU Choir member said the perform ances were the high lights of the trip. "To be able to share our American folk songs with (Africans) and they share theirs was such a moving experience," the student said. The Choir also visited Robben Island, where the late Nelson Mandela was held for 18 years as a political prisoner. The trip also had another important mission. As part of the "Little Dresses for Africa" project. Professor Burke and the Choir presented 27 dress es and flip Hops to the Psi Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. during their concert at the University of Witwatersand in Johannesburg. Psi Tau Omega is the first chapter to be chartered on the continent of Africa by a Greek letter organization. "The trip to South Africa is an important part of the students' col lege education. We are talking about global boundaries outside the walls of this institution," Simmons-Burke said. "Our students need these international experiences to succeed in a global society. We all came back different humans and musicians." E2 O^eta's Restaurant 192 Htil 3rd Street, Suite Lp5 Wiastoa-Salem. NC 27101 Phoae: (336) 750-0811 Open Mon-Fri 17-3 Sunday 12-4 ?? ?
