LaDeara Crest hosts first Neighbor Nite SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE __ The residents of LaDeara Crest, a name derived from the Spanish word ladera, or mountain side, began the New Year together by convening their first Neighbor Nite on Thursday, Jan. 15 (the actu al birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.) from 6-8 p.m. at the community resource center. The event, which included dinner and a discussion of community initiatives, was co-spon sored by Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods (NBN) and the United Way of Forsyth County. Neighbor Nites, an NBN creation that current ly operates in multiple Winston-Salem locations, are where residents connect to discuss and share resources in their own neighborhoods and where they plan projects that directly benefit their fami lies. NBN, a local organiza tion that partners with neighborhood groups, sup ports and enhances resi dent-led activities by pro viding organizing assis tance, technical support, and funding as needed. LaDeara's next Neighbor Nite is planned for Thursday, Feb. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the community resource center. All resi dents are invited to attend. This is not an endorse ment of a vegetarian diet. After the 10 days, the four Hebrew guys look better than the others in training. Now the eunuch puts all of them on pulse. Because of their devotion, God rewards the four with knowledge and under standing in many areas. Daniel also receives the gift of interpreting visions and dreams. Then we jump to Matthew where Jesus gives a lesson on devotion based on fasting. As part of the Sermon on the Mount, the Saviour warns the disciples and the crowd not to put on a "show of holiness." Whatever is done as an act of worship should be sin cere without drawing attention to self. The hyp ocrites (Pharisees in this case) want to display their "holiness" for all to see. Their behavior puts them above everyone else; or does it? Life's Application: For February we focus on being good stewards as a way to worship. God made us caretakers of this cre ation. To do a good job, we must first take care of self. The world, ruled by humans, uses all types of images for success, beau ty, and power. If we fall prey to this indoctrination, we lose our identity and fail to care for each other and creation. To be good stewards, we must pray continuously, be disci plined and depend on God to get the job done! Unfortunately, our public persona is a farce because we really are mean-spirit ed, self-centered, power hungry folk who care nothing or very little about others. Do we devote our selves to the things of God - love, long suffering, mercy, forgiveness, inclu siveness or do we chase the bubbles of life? Religion from page 64 Corinthians 13:13).
