Gentleman's Quorum provides meal for Homeless Overflow Shelter SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE In an effort to reach out to the community, mem bers of the Gentleman's Quorum Inc. at Elementary School Academy recently provided a meal for the Homeless Overflow Shelter. Sam Davis, co founder of the organiza tion, was joined by Jahaun King and Stefano Buffert in presenting the meal to feed 20 homeless men on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the shelter, on Oak Street. The meal consisted of baked spaghetti, corn and green beans. Gentleman's Quorum members pre pared the meal at Davis' home and then transported it to the shelter. The group got the idea from Kimberly Hinton-Robinson, who posted a request on her Facebook page. Members of GQ responded. "We wanted to do something to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves," said King, a fifth-grader at Elementary School Academy who serves as the president of the organization. "On a cold day like today, I'm sure many of the people there are happy to receive a hot meal." Bufifert, the vice presi dent, said he has learned many positive things since becoming a member of Gentleman's Quorum. "I have learned so much about being a good citizen," he said. "Citizenship is one of our core principals, and what we did in making the food is one way we can help our community. It made me feel good about myself to help other people. I am very thankful to be a part of an organization like Gentleman's Quorum." Gentleman's Quorum was established in September 2013 by Davis and Elliot Miley. It was incorporated in July 2014 and has applied for tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 status. Miley said the organization is reaching out to other elementary and middle schools in Forsyth County to establish chap ters. At the 2013 Community Awards Gala, a crowd of about 700 enjoys the event. Awards from pageAl was selected to receive the Religious Leader Award by the men of the Delta Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Pender is the president of the Winston-Salem State University Brown Alumni Chapter, a member of Chi Eta Phi Inc.'s Chi Chi Chapter, the chairwoman of the Forsyth County Democratic Party 81st Precinct , a volunteer and community organizer for the Oak Summit and Country Club Annex Community, a member of the Womens Fund of the Winston Salem Foundation and member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church where she is a Sunday School Teacher. Other awards that will be presented include: ?Curator of the Arts: Chad wick G. Cheek, leader of Diggs Gallery. ?Lifetime Achievement: Lenwood Davis, Evelyn Terry, Nancy Young and Harry Davis. ?Organization of the Year; The Ministers' Conference of Winston Salem and Vicinity. ?Community Service: Claudia Schaefer, Linda Sutton and Patricia Sadler. ? Special Recognition: Children's Law Center The event started as a luncheon then grew. "It got to be so big that we had to have it at night and on the weekend," Pitt said. "We have a communi ty filled with great people who are doing and have done great things. We feel now as we always felt, that we need to pat more people on the back who have gone above and beyond the ordi nary." Pitt said The Chronicle has had help with the gala. "The only way that we are able to do this is because of the support ol major corporations, who believe, as we believe, thai when you have great peo ple, you have a great com munity."
