Equal Housing Opportunity Managed By Community Management Corporation www.wschronicle.com Raleigh man wins Winston-Salem IFB's first "Blind Idol" SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Shane Dittmar of Raleigh, N.C. was named the winner of the first-ever "Blind Idol" singing competition held in Winston-Salem on Feb. 28. Hosted by Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind (IFB), the event was open to individuals who are legally blind and resi dents of North Carolina. "Blind Idol" is believed to be the first competition of its kind in the country. "Blind Idol" showcased the incredible talent of the singers who performed and, perhaps more importantly, underscored the message that people who are blind have many talents, abilities and skills," said "Blind Idol" co-organizer and IFB employee Anastasia Powell. "Being blind is just one piece of who we are as individ uals and does not limit us in any way." Dittmar was one of five finalists who performed in front of a sold-out audience at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. Dittmar sang two orig inal songs and played the piano. A native of Raleigh, he graduated from Sanderson High School and plans to attend UNC-Greensboro later this year to study music composition. Dittmar received a grand prize package valued at $3,000 including a $1,000 cash award, recording time in a professional studio, professional headshot and wardrobe gift card. The other four finalists were Jennifer Finley of Winston-Salem, Taffany Bolger of Winston-Salem, Charity Hampton of Rural Hall and Lucille Mahoney of Asheville. The competition began in the fall of 2014 with audio submissions that led to the selection of 20 semi-finalists who auditioned on Dec. 6 at the Shirley Recital Hall at Salem College to a crowd of more than 240. The judges then select ed the five finalists to perform in the finale competition. "Music has always been such a big part of my life; through music, I've formed deep friendships, made unforget table memories, and discovered my strength, independence, and freedom," said Dittmar. "I am unbelievably thrilled and inexpressibly thankful to IFB, A Brighter Path, SECCA, my fellow contest ants, who are my new friends, and every one else who helped to make 'Blind Idol' the success that it was for the chance that they gave me to bring my music to life." As one of the largest employers of people who are blind or visually impaired in the country, IFB organizes company choirs, bands and other music groups, but it was two employees who came up with the idea of a statewide competition. Powell, program associate for IFB's A Brighter Path, and Chris Flynt, director of A Brighter Path, are both blind and huge music fans. Flynt, a gifted musician in his own right, knows the talent pool runs deep in North Carolina. "You don't need to see to be a performer or to enjoy music. You just have to feel it in your heart," he said. Powell hopes the competition will reinforce the message that people without sight should pursue their professional and personal dreams. "Losing my sight as a teenager was very difficult, but I never let my blindness stand in the way of pursuing my goals," she said. 'Today, I have five beautiful daughters and a rewarding career with IFB." Powell said that IFB plans to expand "Blind Idol" in 2016 to include contest ants from across the United States. Details are available at www.blindidol .com. Winston-Salem Industries for the Blind (IFB) is a nonprofit corporation founded in 1936 that provides employ ment, training and services for people who are blind or visually impaired.
