A little while later, Jesus set a rich young man straight about eternal life. Confused Jesus explained to the disciples that eternal life is a gift from God, not something to be earned. He took the Twelve aside and told them a third time that His death was near. James and John were informed about sitting on the right and left of Jesus. Mark 10 ended with Bartimaeus receiving his sight. Lesson: Jews from all over the Roman Empire converge on Jerusalem for Passover. The celebration commemorates their free dom from Egypt. At this point some of them want deliverance from Roman oppression. As Jesus approaches Bethpage, He sends two of the disciples ahead to the village with specific instructions to find a colt/donkey that has never been ridden. Based on Zech. 9:9 and 14:1-5, Jesus is ready to declare Himself Messiah. Remember how He used to tell them His time was not yet? They follow the instruction to the letter. The animal represents humility. As He enters the city, the crowd recognizes the symbolism. They spread their cloaks on the road and wave tree branch es shouting "Hosanna". The term translates to "save, we pray or help now". "The crowd praises Jesus as Savior. Once in the city. He goes to the Temple, surveys it and returns to Bethany proba bly to Mary, Martha, and Lazarus' house. Life's Application: There is so much chaos in this world that many have lost or are losing hope for a brighter day. It seems that we will destroy ourselves and creation. Hallelujah, the Promised one has come! The disciples and the crowd thought that an earthly kingdom was around the corner. They didn't understand. Some of us don't quite get it, either. It isn't about your earthly accumulations that repre sent your faith; it is about love and compassion. His coming lets us know that God continues to care for all of us! His coming says that in God's time life we will be reunited with Him. The coming of Messiah means that His earthly ministry is about to be completed. As believers our lives are changed for ever!
