Nykiera Stubbs Shandi McDaniel GQ Club and First Presbyterian clean-up Cook Elementary SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Volunteerism is one of the tenants of Christian service. It is also one of the fundamental principles of Gentleman's Quorum Inc., a mentor ship program at Elementary School Academy. As community volunteers from First Presbyterian Church came out to Cook Elementary last Saturday during the church's First Serve effort. Gentleman's Quorum pitched in to help beautify the campus, helping clean inside and outside of the school and with school's landscaping. First Presbyterian sponsors the clean-up effort twice each year, once in the fall and again in the spring. First Presbyterian has already planned its next First Serve for the fall. It will occur in October. In addi tion to providing help with clean-up around the school. Gentleman's Quorum was found ed last year by Sam Davis, a member of the school's staff, at Elementary School Academy. Elementary School Academy is housed at Cook Elementary. One of the criteria for membership in Gentleman's Quorum is that members must perform at least 10 hours of community service each year. "We expect all of the gentlemen in GQ to perform community serv ice," said Elliot Miley, one of GQ's advisors. "They get hands-on experi ence performing a variety of needed duties. It also gives them an opportu nity to meet various members of the community and have an opportunity to interact with them. It is a privilege for our kids to get this type of experi ence and provide service to the com munity in the process." Jahaun King, a member of GQ said he had fun and got some valuable experience helping out. "I really enjoyed having the opportunity to come out and help my school," he said. God's Love Is Guaranteed Lesson Scripture: I John 4:13-5:5 By the end of this lesson, we should Understand ? that love holds a community together ? Give examples of love con quering evil ? Live a life of love; not fear Background: This circular let ter was sent to various churches in Asia Minor. John, the beloved dis ciple, probably penned it in Ephesus. The early churches faced many doctrinal ideas that made the believers doubt. The apostle wrote to expose false teachers and to assure them of their Salvation. He boldly declared that the foundation of their relationship with God was love through Christ Jesus. Chapter four opened with John cautioning them to "test the spirit" that they experienced. If the teacher/spirit didn't acknowledge Jesus as fully human and divine, then it was the "antichrist." He went on to say that their faith in Christ has overcome the false teachers. Therefore, the one (Holy Spirit) who dwells in them is greater than false teachers. The world listens to them but believers follow God. Do you know His voice? Loving one another (with all their faults and ours) is the evi dence that believers are of God. The relationship between believers anrf flr>H is based on love; nothing else! God loved first; He gave His only Son for humanity! You can't beat that! John pre set Pepper* on B5 Mildred "l Peppers Sunday School Lesson I
