Phi Beta Sigma Heritage Awards Gala honors three SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Members of the Delta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. held their annual Darryl A. Prince, Sr. Heritage Awards Gala on Saturday, March 28. The Enterprise Conference and Banquet Center was painted Blue and White as three outstanding leaders were present ed awards on behalf of the fraternity. Those individuals were Chief Barry D. Rountree, the Rev. Dr. Nathan E. Scovens Sr. and William Frasier, Jr. Barry D. Rountree started his career with the Winston Salem Police Department in 1988. He was awarded the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate in August of 1994 by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Standards Training Commission. He was appointed Chief of Police for the City of Winston-Salem on July 1, 2013. The WSPD is a full service police department with 560 swom police officers and 163 non-sworn employees that serves a population of 240,000 residents. Dr. Nathan Scovens, Sr., is the spirited, gifted and anointed Pastor and Teacher of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. He was called to GMBC as its fifth pastor in March 2007. His leadership has guided the church through a period of tremen dous growth. Since his arrival, the church's mem bership growth has tripled. Dr. Scovens preaches. teaches and unequivocally believes that we've been blessed to be a blessing. The Winston-Salem Chronicle recently awarded Dr. Scovens their Man of the Year. William Frasier, Jr., joined Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. during the spring semester of 1999 at Francis Marion University through the Pi Chi Chapter. He currently serves as the 18th Regional Director for the Southeastern Region (NC, SC and Eastern TN) and is a member of the Beta Rho Sigma Alumni Chapter in Charlotte. . Mr. Frasier's motto in life is,"There are 3 P's to Success: Plan, Plant and Preserve," to every situation that one may encounter. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. was founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., January 9,1914, by three young African-American male students. The Founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood, scholar ship, and service. Today, Phi Beta Sigma has. blossomed into an interna tional organization of leaders. No longer a single entity, members of the Fraternity have been instrumental in the establishment of the Phi Beta Sigma National Foundation, the Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union and The Sigma Beta Club Foundation. Sigma Gamma Rho inducts new members to organization SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Alpha Mu Sigma Alumnae and Rho Undergraduate chapters of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. inducted five new members in February. AMS chapter is delighted to welcome three area ladies. Shamale Higgins, an UNCG marketing graduate, is a manager for Wells Fargo Bank. Sade Littlejohn who also graduated from UNCG and is employed by Allegiance. Donna Taylor is an associate attorney with Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy, & Kennedy LLP. She is also a member of Americans Business Women's Association. The Rho undergraduate chapter located on the campus of Winston-Salem State University welcomed Ashley Silver and Brejea Colvin. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Ind. The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30,1929, when a charter was granted to Alpha chapter at Butler University.
