QEA's track and field team
leaves contest as champions
Nspecialto the chronicle
Going into the championship as the
No. 1 Seed, Quality Education Academy's
track and field team did its city proud in
Raleigh on Saturday, May 9, as the top
scoring team out of the five teams who
competed, scoring 111 points overall.
This season's MVPs are Zhane' Epps
and Sierra Burton on the girls' side, and
Chaz Williams ends the season as the boys
MVP. A challenging yet rewarding day for
QEA resulted in the team bringing the
PIAC Championship trophy home, putting
the icing on the cake to an undefeated sea
son.
As the 2014-2015 track and field team
ends with a bang, QEA's student body
begins to shine the light on social injustice
Outraged by the recent deaths of unarmed
African American citizens at the hands of
law enforcement officers in the United
States, students demanded that their voices
be heard. Students planned a peaceful
protest, complete with time and location
and submitted their plans to Chief
Development Officer Tamara Turner.
Turner says, "I was overwhelmed with
i a
pride that our students are so aware of
what's going on in the world around them
... and that tljey care to be heard and desire
to make positive change! It was wonder
ful!" After receiving the green light to
move, the students did just that.
With Senior Class President Frankie
Gist at the helm, a student-led March was
held on Tuesday, May 5. About 200 stu
dents and staff members marched from
Quality Education Academy down Carver
School Road to the community recreation
center and back in an effort to both bring
awareness to the community and seek jus
tice regarding the many social injustices
that are currently plaguing the nation.
Gist says, "We realize as students that
change begins with the individual. We
wish to be the change that we want to see
in the world. That's why we march and
protest peacefully. We love that our school
allows and even encourages us to express
ourselves in a positive way."
