Community Briefs N.C. Highway Patrol promotes first black male telecom shift supervisor The N.C. Highway Patrol has promoted its first African-American male telecommunications shift supervisor in its 86-year history. Cedric L. Thomas of Winston-Salem was pro moted on July 6 and will be stationed at the Troop E. Communications Center in Salisbury. Thomas is a graduate of RJ Reynolds High School Class of 1989 and has Thomas Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University in Florida. "I am humbled by this promotion and take no cred it for my accomplishments because God deserves all the credit," Thomas said. Thomas has been married to Stephanie Dyan Thomas for 28 years and has two children, Courtney Thomas, 19 and Gavin Thomas 10, who reside in Historic Ardmore of the city. Thomas and his family attend Agape Faith Church in Clemmons, where J.B. Whitfield is the founder/senior pastor. Magna Cum Laude graduate of Virginia Commonwealth Stuart D. Cooke III graduated magna cum iaude recently from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences with an emphasis in Operations Research. He also received the Paul Minton Graduating Senior Award and Dean's Scholar Award. Cooke has received a full scholarship to attend Virginia Tech for his master's degree and a scholarship from the Department of Defense. Cooke Cooke is the son of Stuart and Wanda Cook of Hampton, Virginia, and the grandson of the late Christine Cooke of Louisa, Virginia.
