CIAA Hall of Famers amaze SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Over 30 GIAA ball boys and girls had a chance to witness the 2016 CIAA Hall of Famers in the Time Warner Arena in Charlotte. The CIAA Hall of Famers for 2016 are as fol lows: Ronald "Hip" Murray, student/athlete, Shaw University; Tory Woodbury, student/athlete, Winston-Salem State University; Earl "Air" Harvey, student/athlete, North Carolina Central University; Arthur "Roo Boo" Gaskins, student/ath lete, Elizabeth City State University; Mark Sherrill, student/athlete, Johnson Smith University; Dr. Ingrid Wicker-McCree, Coach, North Carolina Central University; Andre Springs, student/athlete, Fayetteville State University; Dianthia Ford Kae, administrator, Fayetteville State University; Dr. Edward McLean, administrator, Elizabeth City State .University and last but not least, Abraham "Mr. CIAA"\litchell, supporter. Of all of the CIAA Hall of Famers most remem bered to CIAA Ball Captain Ben Piggott, who has volunteered with the CIAA Ball Boys and Girls since it was started in Winston-Salem, said it would be Tory "Hollywood" Woodbury. "I remember Tory when he was a young man grow ing up in the Happy Hill community and coming to the William C. Sims Sr. Recreation Center," said Piggott. "It is a great honor to watch a young man grow up, even though Tory won 2 CIAA football champi onships at WinstonrSakm State University, played NFL football for New York Jets, New Orleans Saints, Buffalo Bills, coached at Delaware State, and is now an offensive coordinator at Johnson C, Smith University, he still helps children with his founda tion," said Piggott. "I am thankful for Robert Chadwick, Dave Morrison, Toya Morrison, Jeff Brantley and Tim Cunningham for doing an outstanding job with the children in the CIAA Ball Boys and Girls Program." SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE I Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) pounded out 13 hits, but it was the four last ones that made the difference. Willie McRae singled past the shortstop with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the WSSU Rams a 6-5 walk-off win in the series finale on Sunday, March 6, at BB&T Ballpark. The win moves Winston-Salem State "to 8-11 overall, while Concord falls to 3-8 on the season. <?>?*",*.v> Concord scored firswon an rbi single to left field in the top of die first inning to give the Mountain Lions the early 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Connor Bodenhamer doubled to left field and would be brought home on a Randy Norris triple down the right field line to tie the \ game. Jason Baytop would hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Bodenhamer, to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth inning, Jason Baytop reached on a fielder's choice and would eventually be brought home on a Nathan Steger single to right field to push the Rams lead to 3-1. The Concord Mountain Lions answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the game at 3-3. The Rams added another run in the fifth inning, after Michael McNamara started the inning with a walk, and would be brought home later in the inning on a Phillip Page single to give the Rams a 4-3 lead. WSSU looked to put the game away in the sixth when Nathan Steger scored on an Ivan Acuna single to center field, giving the Rams a 5-3 lead, heading into the late innings. But once again< the Mountain Lions were resilient, and battled back with a big two-ran double in the top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 5-5 heading into the ninth inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Ivan Acuna led off with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt from Phillip Page. Emilio Abreu would pinch ran for Acuna, and the bases would become loaded on an error from the Concord pitcher fielding a come-backer, setting the stage for the late game heroics. Willie McRae would single over the short stops head, allowing Page to score and giv ing the WSSU Rams the walk-off 6-5 win. Jordan Cummings picked up the win for WSSU, throwing one pitch in the bot tom of the eighth inning to get the Rams out of the inning with score still tied. Devin Mcjs^more pitched 5.0 innings, allowing^ight hits and three runs, "fyler Scearce went 22 innings, allowing twb runs on three hits, and Kanoa Hironaka pitched one inning, allowing one hit. The Rams were led at the plate by Phillip Page, who finished 3 for 5 with one run scored and one run batted in. Randy NoniS went 2 for 5 with one run scored and one run batted in, while Landon Steiner also finished 2 for 5. Jason Baytop, Willie McRae, Brandon Fowler, Nathan Steger, Ivan Acuna and Conner Bodenhamer each had one hit. Baytop and Steger each scored one run and had one run batted in. Michael McNamara and Bodenhamer each scored a run. Randy Norris also had a triple and Bodenhamer a double. WSSU takes second loss of CIAA Round Up SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-4, 0-2 CIAA) gave a strong effort, but the team could not find any answers in a 9-0 loss to the Chowan Lady Hawks (8-1,2-0 CIAA), Sunday morning on the second day of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round Up. The Rams opened the day with three N straight doubles losses, falling 8-2, 8-1, and 8-0 in first, second, and third doubles 0 respectively. The duo of junior Gabrielle w Lindsay and sophomore Aja Grant had the w best effort with two points in doubles play. F; The Rams also took six losses in sin- D gles play. Senior Devan Corpening had the < r i best effort with a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 4 singles. Freshman Miranda Legg fell 6-3, 6-0 at No .6 singles, while Grarit took a 6-0,6-3 loss at With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-4 verall and 0-2 in CIAA play.
