Through its flagship pro
gram Neighbors in Action
- which includes trainings
designed to help individu
als understand current sys
tems and how their com
munity is situated within
them - the organization is
able to empower citizens
and help open up meaning
ful civic avenues for low
income communities in
Winston-Salem.

S.G. Atkins

Development
Corporation
I (CDC) spear
heads a number
of initiatives, its primary
areas of focus include
housing development and
renovations; community
based initiatives including
the cultivation of a commu
nity garden; and The
Enterprise Center - a com
bination of a business incu
bator and community edu
cation center. To date, some
of the CDC's accomplish
ments have included
investing $5 million for the
adaptive reuse and opera
tion of a 40,000-square
foot building that is a hub
of community activity; pro
viding $200,000 in
microloans to minority and
women-owned businesses,
and harvesting more than
3,000 pounds of organic
fruits and vegetables
through its community gar
den.
