A Reversal of Shame
Lesson Scripture:
Luke 7:36-50
By the end of this les
son, we will
?Know the story of
Jesus' tenderness for a
repentant woman and His
forgiveness of her sins
?Express the great joy
that comes from knowing
our sins have been forgiv
en
?Forgive others for
their failures, shortcom
ings, and hurtful actions
Background: This
event of the woman
anointing Jesus is not to be confused with the accounts in
Matthew, Mark, and John. In all three of them, the woman
anointed Jesus' head with the perfume. In Luke's account,
the perftime is used to anoint Jesus' feet and there is a
parable used. The other three gospels have no parable and
are immediately followed by Judas Iscariot's decision to
betray Jesus. Luke's account, however, is followed by
r
Jesus moving from town
to town preaching and
teaching healing and rais
ing the dea<J. Note also
that in Luke, Simon is a
Pharisee and in the other
three Simon is a leper.
Also the other three take
place in Bethany, while
Luke's account is most
likely in Galilee. Finally,
in Luke there is an issue
of social etiquette, while
in Matthew, Mark, and
John there is a question
of cost and waste ... pol
itics if you will.
Lesson: a rnansee
named Simon asks Jesus to come to his house and eat with
him. This probably occurred around midday after a syna
gogue service. Jesus accepts and accompanies the man to
his home where He is seated at the table. Special meals
were not eaten while sitting upright in chairs. The posture
