WSSU's Marcel Caver Jr. invited to Detroit Lions rookie mini-camp SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE Winston-Salem State University senior wide receiver, Marcel Caver, has been invited to the Detroit Lions rookie mini-camp for a tryout and opportunity to sign a rookie deal. The 6-2, 185-lb. senior from Bedford heights, Ohio, played two seasons at WSSU after transferring from Youngstown State. Caver led the Rams in catches in 2015, with 36. During his career at WSSU, Caver played in 20 games and amassed 76 receptions for ljOOl yards and four touchdowns. He was a part of the 2015 CIAA Championship team for the Rams. Caver Snipes named to All-Region Team SPECIAL TO THE CHRONICLE . The honors keep com ing in for the Winston Salem State University softball program as fresh man utility Destiny Snipes was. named to the Conference Commissioner's Association (CCA) NCAA Division II Atlantic/District 2 All Region team, on May 9. The freshman from Burlington earned second team honors after a stellar season. Snipes wasted little time in making an impact on the Rams softball pro gram. In addition to help ing the team claim the 2016 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) cham Snipes pion and a bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region 1 Tournament, she also earned a spot on the CI A A All-Rookie team. For the season. Snipes batted .297 with a team high 31 runs batted in (RBI). Her 31 RBIs were the eighth most in the CIAA. She also recorded 10 stolen bases. The regional award came after she also earned a spot on the CIAA All Rookie team. Robin and Charles Paul, parents of nine-time NBA All Star Chris Paul, were on hand to assist in distributing the shoes. As part of their gift, each stu dent received a pair of socks courtesy of La De Da. Also, the Foundation, with Shoes That Fit, pro vided 218 new pairs of shoes to students in need at Cook Elementary School on May 3. Teachers and adminis trators report when chil dren receive new shoes and other. necessities for school, they are more excited about school, more alert, and more active on the playground.
