June 23-30 - CPR Classes Winston-Salem firefighters will offer "hands-only" CPR training to the public through city recreation centers during May and June. "Hands only" CPR uses only chest compressions. The classes last about an hour. Interested citizens should sign up at a participating recreation center. Space is limited. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center ?June 30, 11 a.m., Little Creek Community Center June 24 - Ekphrastic Night at the Museum Winston-Salem Writers and New Winston Museum are partnering' for a Ekphrastic Night at the Museum on Friday, June 24, from 6-9. p.m. (Ekphrastic: q device in which one medi um of art tries to connect to another medi um by defining and describing it in an effort to relate more directly with its audi ence.) Writers are asked to stop by the museum between now and June 24 to view the "Birth of the Cool" photography exhibit by Owens Daniels and write a poem or spoken word piece that is inspired by one of the photos. On June 24, writers will read their pieces. Lorraine Boland, jazz and blues vocalist, will perform, and Alex Baum will play guitar and provide background music as the writers read their works. June 26 - Sounds of Summer organ concert Old Salem Museums & Gardens is pre senting a free organ concert on Sunday, June 26 at 7 pjn. in the James A. Gray, Jr. Auditorium in the Old Salem Visitor Center at 900 Old Salem Road. Organists Scott Carpenter, Mary Lou Kapp Peeples, and Dreama Lovitt will perform a concert on the 1800 David Tannenberg Organ. The Tannenberg Organ is the largest surviving pipe organ built by David Tannenberg (1728-1804), who is widely regarded as one of America's greatest organ builders. Camps for Kids Limited spaces are still available for the Reynolda House Museum's popular Summer Adventures half-day camps for children. Art and writing camps are avail able starting June 27 and continuing through July for students who have com pleted grades kindeigarten through fifth grade, and an advanced writing workshop camp is offered for students who have completed sixth through ninth grades. All camps include exploring the full museum and grounds, and swimming in the historic pool. The museum is located at 2250 Reynolda Rd. June 30 - Insects in the Garden workshop Forsyth Community Gardening will present a workshop on "Insects in the Garden: Attracting Beneficials, Managing Pests," on Thursday, June 30, from 6-8 p.m., at El Buen Pastor Community Garden, 4637 Tim Rd. July 11-15 - LEGO Robotics camp Winston-Salem State University will offer two camps which will run July 11-15 for middle and high school students and elementary school students. The LEGO Robotics camp, for 7th through 10th grade students, offers progressive approaches to instruction and the provided kits serve as the foundation for the very popular FIRST LEGO League extra-curricular and after school activities and competitions. The benefits to each student include: hands-on education, meets national learning stan dards, integrates STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), builds teamwork, and work that is fun and challenging. Registrations are still being accepted. The cost for the camp is $150. The second camp, for elementary school students in grades 3-5, will offer a math, science and literacy component. Both are day camps and run from 8 a.m. to 5 pan. July 12 - Public Safety Advisory Committee meeting The Lewisville Public Safety Advisory committee has scheduled a special meet ing for Tuesday, July 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Town Hall for finalizing plans for the com mittee's participation in the Town's 25th anniversary celebration. Through Labor Day - Program for Military Families Reynolds House, 2250 Reynolds Rd.., will again participate in the Blue Star Museums Program through Labor Day by offering free admission to members of the military and their family. The Winston Salem museum is one of more than 2,000 museums across the country to offer free admission to military families in collabo ration with the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, and the Department of Defense. This is the sev enth year Reynolda House has participated in the program. The free admission offer is available through Sept. 4 to active-duty military and their family members (mili taiy ID holder and up to five family mem bers) including Army, Navy, Air Force. Marines, Coast Guard, and active duty National Guard and active duty Reserve members. The complete list of participat ing museums is available at arts.gov/blues tarmuseums. Reynolda House extends free individual admission year-round to active and veteran military personnel. Going on now - Bulky Item Collection Returning The city's annual bulky item pick-up will continue through Sept .2. Crews will go through the city street by street, collect ing bulky items that garbage crews cannot accept. Furniture, mattresses, appliances, grills, carpet, old toys, and lawn furniture can all be set out. The city cannot collect televisions, computer equipment, building materials, hazardous waste; tires, cement, cars and car parts, stumps,'tanks and oil drums, fire wood or yard waste. Do not mix bulky items with yard waste, recy clables or brush. Bulky item collection is for single family residences, not business es or apartments. The Sanitation Division Will mail post cards in advance to let home owners know when bulky item collection will be held in their neighborhood. Crews will go through each neighborhood only once. To ensure collection, items must be at the curb by 6 a.m. the Monday of your collection week. Residents without computer access can call CityLink at 311 or 727-8000 and a CityLink agent will look up the collection date. Ongoing A.H.
