GRADY JOHNSON TO H€AD i WOMAN'S CLUB AT LILLINGTON A nominating commute*. seeking, officers for the ÜBtagton Wo man’s Club, and being frequently refused, has offered a novel solu tion to the small town’* ever-pre sent problem of “Who’ll do It." Rather than ask another reluctant person, the committee volunteered to do It themselves. Mrs. J. N. Fuquay, chairman of the nomin ating committee, said she would be secretary. Mrs. Harry Schafran agreed to be treasurer. Outnum bered two to one, Mrs. yj. Grady Johnson, third member of the committeee, was nominated aa iatlon of the opportunity to mrve in that poel and thanked co-workers for their loyal cooperation. Mrs. Inez Segsoms read a brief apprec iation for Mrs. Harrington’s services and a song in her honor was sung by Mrs. Mary McLeod. Other mus icians for the installation ceremony were Mrs. Alice Bethune and Mrs. Sejssoms, pianists. Following Mrs. Mace’s acceptance speech, Mrs. Harrington was pre sented the past worthy matron’s jewel, a gift from the order. Mrs. Effle Jackson, retiring conductress, made the presentaUon. A social hour followed the In stallation. Refreshments of punch and cakes in the emblematic colors were served with salted nuts. Mrs. Ann Phelps presided at the silver punch bowl and Mrs. Marjorie Tay lor and Mrs. Effie Jackson assist ed in serving. In the past year under the leadership of Mrs. Womble the club: has presented many fine programs, staged an elaborate fashion show, helped staff a seven-day volunteer recreation center for service men during the Army maneuver, 1 “Southern Pine”, sponsored a Christmas bazaar which attracted over 500 persons, and contributed heavily to the Community Center bulldin gfund. Baggett, Jr. of Lilting ton this week Was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa scholastic fraternity at the Un iversity of North Carolina. I This is the highest scholastic honor that can come to a Un iversity student. Baggett, who is a junior, maintained a three-year average of 94 percent or higher on . all subjects. i The Lilllngton student has al lready been accepted by the Un iversity Medical School which he will enter next fall as a combined senior and first year medical stu dent.
