Vail Award' for e heroism which Klhg earned last t year when he rescued a fellow r worker from a flame-filled man - hole. 8 On March. 9, 1951, King and * Cable Splicer J. W. Britt were working In a man-hole In. Fayette ville. Additional telephone cable was being placed In the under ground conduit system and It was I necessary rrir the men to work In the manhole. At a moment when Britt was working alone in the un derground chamber, gas, which ap parently had been accumulating for some time, suddenly ignited filling the manhole with intensely hot .blue flame. • King, who was near the manhole opening, immediately shouted to Britt to get out of the hole. Al though flames were billowing 8 to 10 feet above street level, King approached the opening and. reach ing Britt who was attempting to escape from the hole, lifted him from the flames and assisted him | until aid arrived. ; Both of the Telephone Company I men suffered bums, Britt being | the most severely injured, and It is | believed that through quick think- I ing and heroic actions without re- I gard for his personal safety, King averted a fatal accident. The Vail Award, a bronze medal ! accompanied by a lapel replica and i and an Inscribed scroll, was pre i sented to Klhg by L. W. Hill, Pres- I ident of the Carolina Telephone ! and Telegraph Company.
