Mississippi Blacks Ask Help At · recent press conference in Drew, Mississippi, Cleve McDowell, a Black Mississ ippi, Attorney, announced his Candidacy for the Mississippi State Legislature as a Rep resentative of Sunflower Coun ty, Post 1. Cleve McDowell again at tracted National attention when he challenged Mississippi Jus-' lice after Miss Jo KtKa ΟοΓ lier, an 18 year old Black High School Student, was gun ned down by White· from a passing car the night at her graduation from a newly "in tegrated" school in Drew, year. In his announcement, Mc Dowell said that: "Sunflower County is 62.8 percent Black yet. Blacks have only one mi nor political office in the County:" Jn this heavily Black populated County that is the home of U.S. Senator James O. Eastland, unemployment and - under-employment are only two of the many" pro blems facing Blacks in Sun flower County, Attorney Mc - Dowell stated. McDowell feels that the key to economic and social jus tice in Sunflower County Is political representation in-all phases of State Government. Blacks are running for most of the County positions that are available for this year. ' McDowell has committed him self to seek financial aid for the lesser Known candidates on the' County Independent Tic ket. McDowell stated that the political Candidates in this - race in Sunflower County are fighting for the right of Blacks across the County.
