Black Named To Crime Commission Governor James —E. Holshouser, Jr_ has an __nounced the appointment of Black Durham attorney, Clarence Malone. Jr to North Carolina's Crime Study Commission. Malone, a 1951 graduate of University, presently serves as Secretary of the Southern Lawyers Association and is president of the George H White Bar Association. _The 1973 North Carolina General Assembly passed a bill which called for the creation of the Crime Study Commission to review present legislation and make future •t legislative recommendations to combat crime in the state. -He—Larnie_CL_Hnrtnn Special Assistant to the Governor for Minority Affairs, said Malone's Appointment is “in keeping with Governor Holshouser’s campaign pledge to insure that all citizens of the state of North Carolina, regardless of race, creed or color, would have representative input in the affairs of state government.” The Crime Study Com mission consists of nin« members appointed two-year terms. United Way Seeks Over w. $2 Million A record goal of $2,858,748.93 was officially ...approved yesterday for" the 1973 Mecklenburg - Union County United Way campaign. The figure was recom mended by Don Dixon, Chairman of the Budget Board. The goal was unanimously accepted by the Trustees at the morning meeting at the Central YMCA in Charlotte. * Don Davidson, General Campaign Chairman for this year’s United Way campaign, said “This year’s goal is the -most—ambitious—gnni w.r presented. If we simply reach this objective, we are leaving a lot of needs among these agencies unmet.” Mr. Davidson, speaking before the same group, said the needs of more people in our area, plus the addition of Union County has made a higher goal necessary. This year, the United Way wjll consist of more than fifty agencies. For the first time. Union County will Join with the Charlotte - Mecklenburg area in the annual fund raising drive. NAACP. Carowinds Ends First Summer With well over a million guests through the turnstiles. Carowinds has ended its daily summer season and now returns to a weekend operating schedule through September, October and November. The new, 73-acre theme park will open from 10 a m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays only until Thanksgiving weekend. The park season will end with an extended Thanksgiving holiday schedule of operation from November 22 through November 25. The 1974 season will begin on the first weekend in April. Carowinds hosted its one millionth guest of 1973 on August 22, on the way to its projected total attendance near Itfe million.
