Black Co-Ed Diane Marie Hill Is Star Among Super-Stars A nineteen year-old black co-ed became a star among the super-stars, at the 27th Annual Bing Crosby National Pro-Am golf tournament here , this month. Diane Marie Hill, sophomore, at Saint Paul's college, in Virginia, was dined anu wmea ana nonorea during the four-day classic tourney, for her outstanding personal achievements, and received a $2,000 loan scholarship to continue her college education. Diane’s award, scholarship and trip lo Pebble Beach was co-sponsored by the Crosby Youth Fund and the Min nesota Minning and Manufacturing Company (3M). . The Crosby Youth Fund, now in its 27th year, has distributed millions of dollars to student loan funds in 88 colleges and universities onuaa Hie country. The funds are derived from the proceeds of the tourney. Last year, Saint Paul’s, a I predominantly black four year college, was one of the institutions selected to receive a total sum of $5,000 to be made available to needy students. Diane was chosen, as a recipient, because of her financial need, and high academic accomplishments. Greeted and congratulated by golf-pros, movie stars and famous personalities, Diane said she really felt special. “Almost everyone dreams about such experiences, one time or another," Diane ad ded. “Like being among celebrities, and going places that you only get to see in the movies or on television. But this really happened to m£. 'Tm convinced now," she continued, "that anything is possible, that is, if you believe in yourself, and you're willing to work for it.” Work for it, she did. Diane I has worked since she was 14 years old to help with family expenses. She is one of nine children, and the first in her family to ever attend college. “We were poor,” said Diane, "but the one thing I can always afford is deler r— mination and effort 1 worked throughout high school, and thought many times that I would continue to work and help my family rather than think about college. But friends and a high school teacher encouraged me to try. And I did."
