Doris Grier To Preach ‘Trial Sermon’ Sunday By BILL JOHNSON Post's Manager-Editor Doris Grier will reach a new milestone in his colorful life time Sunday evening at 7:30 o’clock. At that precise hour the popular staff-member of Alexander's Funeral Home will preach his "Trial Ser mon" at Silver Mount Baptist Church' near Pineville, N.C. Well-dressed in a blue double-knit suit with blue and • white shirt and tie ac cessories, the handsome gentleman said Tuesday af ternoon: “It (preaching) is something I never thought seriously about until I became a member of Silver Mount Baptist Church a little over two years ago." He credits eight close friends with being in strumental in his new directions into the ministry. "You’ll have to say that Rev. William Lee Jr. deserves most of the credit," he explained. “Working in the church under his personal suDervision._ along with the help of deacon Theodore Leake, Deacon A.A. Holloway, Deacon Henry Stinson and Sister Isabell Leake, made me take a better look at becoming a minister." Player Of The Week By ALAN ROUNDTREE News Staff Writer The prep- basketball season is nearing playoff time and it is time for everyone to put their best effort forward. The Lion's of West Charlotte High were forced to come up with nothing short of a super effort when they took on perennial Mecklenburg champions South Mecklen burg High in their gym last week. Trailing by five points with only 1:43 left in the game the Lion’s went to the ' ‘Harris Machine’’ to pull them out of trouble. The "Harris-Machine" as it is referred, to around the _ westside campus is composed of Phil and Eric Harris. Both are excellent offensive and defensive players and the pair couldn’t have picked a better time for an allround per formance than the game against South. With Eric scoring the last n West Charlotte points to pull the Lions to a 49-47 victory putting them in a three-way tie for first place in the South western 4-A Division 9. For his efforts in that game Eric Harris has been selected as the Charlotte Poet’s Prep Basketball Player of the Week. He is the first prep player to win the award twice this season. Called ’’one of the finest players ever to play at West Charlotte" by his coach Charles McCullough, Eric canned 25 points for the game and contributed some timely defensive plays as well. A totally unselfish player who get* along well with his teammates, Harris keeps a cool hand under pressure, "We knew what we had to do. He says "working with the president of the Silver Mount Baptist Church's Ushers Chorus gave me deeper thoughts and more serious concern about religion.” Mrs. Leake is President of the Usher's Board. WILLIE SAMUEL PARKER ...Student Missionary Teacher Parker To Teach In Pusan, South Korea Willie Samuel Parker, 20 stead Road, has become the first black from Oak wood College , a Seventh Day Adventist College" in HHuntsville, Alabama, to do Student Missionary teaching at the National Church’s Mission School in Pusan South Korea. The Oakwood College junior will take a leave of absence from his college studies in order to spend one year teaching English and Bible courses at the Seventh Day Adventist Mission School before returning to complete requirements for his degrees in Religion and Secondary Education. The National Churcn contributes *100 per month toward his maintenance. The church also paid the *638 one way plane fare for the trip which tek him from Charlotte, to Los Angeles, to Honolulu, to Tokyo, Japan, and landed in the capital city of Seoul, South Korea. He then traveled 6 hours by bus to arrive at the school’s location in Pusan, South Korea. Prior to his departure in January, Willie delivered a farewell speech to the congregation of Berean Seventh Day Adventist Church on Double Oaks Road, on Sabbath.December 29,1973, where he was a member . Willie was chosen from only 5 persons of the total college population recom mended by the faculty of Oak wood College to represent the school. He is a 1970 graduate of Mt. Pisgah High School Academy Candler, N.C.
