Joannie Saunders Joseph Green Named CMS Safety Director Josepir-E^-Oreen^assHstaw— to the principal at Hawthorne Junior High School, has been -named new safely director nl the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Appointed by.recent action of the CMS Board of Education. Green will assume his new duties when a replacement is found for him at Hawthorne. He will develop, organize, implement and coordinate a continuing program of safety emphasis in the school system aimed at employee and public safety, including students and the general public while on school property or involved in school-sponsored events. He will coordinate CMS safety efforts with those of workmen's compensation, insurance companies and federal, state, county and city departments with particular emphasis on the requirements of the federal Occupational Safely and Health Act (OSHA). Green will administer job safety training, recommend W* safety standards and -equip ment, inspect-facilities, work with various safety com mittees, maintain safety accident records disseminate ^aiviy mtr.rnuaan, and work with supervisors in evaluating safety programs. The new safely director’s position was created m November when the Mecklenburg County Com mission approved a Board of Education request for funds for the position. Since November. Green has served as chairperson of a Safely Curriculum Advisory Committee made up of ad ministrators, teachers, students and members of the community The committee lias been studying ways to promote a greater safety awareness in the school system. Green has been employed by CMS since 1962. He was a teacher at J.T. Williams Junior High School until being named assistant to the principal at Hawthorne this past summer. Before coming to Charlotte, he was an elementary teacher in Murfreesboro, Tenn., for two years. A graduate of Fisk University, Green holds the master of science degree from Indiana University. Mrs. Jeanette Smith, Hattiesburg. Miss., will .present the awards. Workshops and committees will continue through out the evening. The Friday night session is expected to be the crowning event, when the Freedom Wards Dinner will be held at 8. __ • t Food Town Opens 20th Supermarket Food Town Stores opened its twentieth super market unit Wednesday. (Marcli 13) in Kannapolis. Located in the Cabarrus Shopping City on Cannon Boulevard, the 15.400 square foot unit will be the second Food Town Store in Kan napolis. Food Town, termed one of the fastest growing super market chains in the Southeast, has seen salds grow from $5 million in 1967 to over $71 million in 1973.
