Short Says: Nixon Pardon Raises Serious Questions The parcfop ' of ' Richard Nixon by President Ford raises serious questions, 9th district congressional candidate Milton Short said Monday. Short criticized Republican Congressman Jim Martin's comment that Nixon "was forced to resign ” Short said, “The reality is that Mr. Nixon’s own misdeeds made it mandatory that he resign. Sen. Goldwater himself stated that he doubted whether Nixon had 12 votes in the Senate. And yet Jim Martin is now imply ing that the press and the Democrats—hounded—Mr. Nixorrout of office." Short said that the impor tant thing now is to establish for the historical record all Watergate facts. "If Rodino is headed off by the resignation, and Jaworski is headed off by the pardon, how will we get all the facts out and get the question .. 4k answered that so badly needs to be answered. That question is the extent of Mr Nixon’s personal involvement,” Short said. “There are questions whether or not Mr. Nixon was aware- of and- approved-of— breaking and entering activit ies and spying activitities going back to 1969, using the FBI and the CIA," Short said, ,(Vhese alleged activities be came more and more politi cal, and in 1971 it was no longer possible to continue with the FBI and the CIA, Mr Nixon then allegedly arranged the creation of the "Plum bers” who operated out of the White House.” Short also said that Presi dent Ford’s pardon brings up the question of fairness to other Watergate defendants. “None of them has been par doned even after trial or serv ing of sentence-much less be fore indictment,” he said Short also questioned the credibility of President Ford. He said, “Mr. Ford indicated at his Vice Presidential Ap pointment hearings that he had made no deal to pardon 1 Richard Nixon and that he would not do so."
